An oak and mahogany thirty hour longcase clock, signed Wm Hargraves, circa 1830, swan neck pediment, trunk door flanked by turned mahogany pilasters, recessed mahogany crossbanded plinth, 14-inch painted arched dial, four pillar movement with anchor escapement and outside countwheel striking on a bell, 229cm high 22.03.18, Case with small scuff marks in places, finials are missing, hood columns with some rubbing and flaking to the surfaces, hood door with small chips, dial with scratches and slightly discoloured to the centre, movement needs cleaning, with one weight and a pendulum.
An early Victorian mahogany cased bracket clock, having an unsigned white enamel dial, single winding hole for a chain driven eight day four pillar fusee movement, having anchor escapement, case interior bears repairers label for Francis Kerby of Jersey, dated 1849, h.43cm Condition Report / Extra Information Not currently in working order.No key or pendulum.
Suffragette / Scottish Interest: An original envelope, postmarked Edinburgh, February 19 1913, defaced with ink by suffragettes in an organised attack on pillar boxes in Edinburgh (the General Post Office was state-owned and so this formed part of the wider protest against government). The envelope, addressed to a Geo. MacRobert Esq of 1 Murieston Crescent, Edinburgh, bears a contemporary newspaper clipping (pasted to verso): 'Pillar-Box Outrages in Edinburgh. An Organised Raid. 2000 Letters Damaged. The Militant Sufragettes have again been tampering with the post pillar boxes in Edinburgh, and this time there has apparently been a concerted plan, for boxes in numerous districts of the city and in Leith were attacked about the same time last night.'Provenance: George MacRobert, the recipient of the letter, was vendor's great-grandather.
An 18th century North Country 30 hour longcase clock, Hugh Lough, Penrith, the mahogany case with swanneck pediment, above 12.5inch (32cm) brass dial with painted moonphase disc to the arch, silvered chapter ring and dial centre with signed inset circular plaque, curved calendar aperture below, gilt foliate spandrels, 4 pillar bell striking movement, the trunk with short door flanked by quarter columns, the base with canted corners on ogee bracket feet 230cm high case probably associated.
A William III walnut eight-day longcase clock William Grimes, London, circa 1695-1700 The eight-day five finned pillar inside countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum and outside strike locking detent, the 11.25 inch square brass dial with subsidiary seconds dial, ringed winding holes and scroll border engraved calendar aperture to the matted centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised sword hilt half hour markers, Arabic five minutes to narrow outer track and signed W’m Grimes. Londini fecit to lower edge, with fine pierced blued steel hands and angles applied with winged cherub mask and foliate scroll cast spandrels with scroll engraved infill between, the case with ogee moulded cornice and floral trail pierced fret to frieze above glazed fixed dial surround applied with Solomonic three-quarter columns to front angles, the sides with rectangular windows and conforming quarter columns applied next to bargeboards at the rear, the trunk with convex throat moulding over 42 inch rectangular door centred with an oval lenticle and veneered with three pairs of book-matched panels within a herringbone banded surround, the sides veneered with twin herringbone bordered panels, the base with stepped ogee top moulding and conforming book-matched panel within further crossbanded surround over bun feet, 204cm (80.25ins) high. Provenance: Private collection, Hampshire (ref. C16); purchased at Sotheby’s, London, 19th December 1991 (lot 167) for £6,800 hammer. William Grimes is recorded in Loomes, Brian The Clockmakers of Britain 1286-1700 as born in Shilton, Leicestershire in 1737 and is thought to have trained under his uncle, Thomas Grimes, before moving to London by 1682 when he was made a Free Brother of the Clockmakers’ Company. William Grimes worked from Hatton Garden, London and amongst his apprentices was John Topping (1691) who subsequently became well known for his complex longcase clocks with astronomical functions. William Grimes is thought to have died in around 1705.

Gardi' to lower chapter ring, in a case with stepped cornice and pokerwork and fretwork frieze on later plain turned pilasters over a convex throat, the trunk with rectangular door with central circular lenticle and inlaid with three floral and foliate marquetry panels and marquetry borders, on a later rectangular plinth base with conforming decoration, 85¼in.
