IIrene Lees 'I'm Nobody, Who Are You?' From the poem by Emily Dickinson, 2021 Continuous Line Drawing In Black Pen on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) My whole practice is about drawing, which is such a wonderfully expressive tool that I use to portray what I see, what I am thinking, and what I feel. For me drawings are one of the most instant and fascinating ways of "thinking" visually. Drawing is a discipline through which a breadth of ideas, processes and parameters can be generated. I use drawing as a tool for investigating ideas, a record of knowledge, and a reflector of experience, in fact it shows me how to think. CAROLINE VON DER EMBDE (ATTR.) 1812 Kassel - 1867 Hamburg Selbst(?)bildnis der Künstlerin in jungen Jahren Öl auf Leinwand (doubl.). 95 x 77 cm (R. 105 x 87 cm). Min. besch., rest. Rahmen. Vgl. Neue Galerie, Kassel: Caroline von der Embde, Selbstbildnis 1855, Inv.Nr. 1875/1635 CAROLINE VON DER EMBDE (ATTR.) 1812 Kassel - 1867 Hamburg Self(?)-portrait of the artist in early years Oil on canvas (relined). 95 x 77 cm (F. 105 x 87 cm). Min. damaged, rest. Frame. The portrayed woman glances pensively to the left, holding mahlstick and painter`s palette in her hands as well as what seems to be a mirror. A canvas placed on an easel in the backround thus indicates the painting to be a self portrait. The comparison with a later image in the collection of Neue Galerie Kassel illustrates geat resemblance with the artist Caroline von der Embde (1812-1867), elder daughter of the local genre and portrait painter August von der Embde (1780-1862), pictured as confident woman at a young age.
