A photocopy of the original receipt is available with this lot. Condition Report: There are some marks, scratches, knocks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are some cracks and small restorations to the crests and pierced splats including splits along the grain of the timber; some legs with some repairs; some crests probably refixed; some later corner blocks and seat rails; the front stretcher to one chair (with one piece of loose webbing) is later, others possibly including to one chair that has more small repairs than the other chairs with some later stretchers, filler to the back of the seat rail and cracks to the splat.There is evidence of worm including to the seat rails, visible to the interior and to the back rail of the exterior of the chair.The upholstery is damask of some age, the filling including horsehair - it is in a clean unworn condition. We are unable to inspect areas covered in upholstery and so cannot comment on the condition and originality of these areas we are unable to see.Please refer to the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition. The rectangular central panel has bowed so that it does not sit flat. There is a small rectangular patch to this panel and some areas of filler.The border has some chips including to three shaped scroll carved corners; the border with a small pale patch of timber; the mitred joints with some cracks. A PAIR OF CARVED GILTWOOD AND GESSO WALL MIRRORSIN GEORGE III STYLE, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY each 130cm high, 63cm wideProvenance: The collection of Standish Robert Vereker, 7th Viscount Gort (1888- 1975) at Hamsterley Hall, Co. DurhamInherited by The Hon. Catherine Mary 'Kate' Wass, OBE (1942-2021) upon the death of her great-uncle, the 7th Viscount Gort, in 1975This pair of giltwood mirrors with distinctive palm fronds is in the 18th century style promoted by John Vardy (1718-65) whose magnificent Palm Room and furnishings en suite at Spencer House, London, serve as the culmination of the craftsman's oeuvre. A design for a pier glass, entwined with palm leaves, for a pair of pier glasses for Charles Powlett, 5th Duke of Bolton (1718-65) at Hackwood Park, Hampshire, is discussed in A. Coleridge, 'John Vardy and the Hackwood Suite', The Connoisseur, January 1962, pp. 12-17. The presence of Ho-Ho birds, rocaille and columnar carving are further 18th century rococo motifs found in designs from the mid-1750s to early 1760s by Matthias Lock (1710-65), Thomas Johnson (1714-after 1778) and Thomas Chippendale (1718-79) (see P. Mortimer, London, Gun-Maker To His Majesty, Late 18th CenturyConverted from flintlock, and with silver fore-sight with rebrowned twist barrels each signed along the breeches, engraved with a line of beadwork at the rear, case-hardened border engraved tangs each grooved for sighting and decorated with a foliated scallop shell, signed flat bevelled case-hardened locks (mainsprings replaced, one retaining screw and one hammer retaining screw replaced and broken) each with stepped tail, safety-catch and foliate engraved hammer, figured half-stocks each with rounded pineapple chequered butt, blued steel mounts comprising border engraved trigger-guards in the French taste and each with large pineapple finial and decorated with foliage on the bow, rear ramrod-pipe with pineapple finial en suite, and original ramrods each with iron worm, one with horn tip and the other with threaded tip also forming a powder-measure: in original lined and fitted oak case with brass-mounted three-way powder-flask covered in black leather, and steel bullet mould, the interior of the lid with maker's illustrated trade label for 1783-99, the exterior with folding brass carrying handle of Chippendale form, London proof marks and Mortimer's barrelsmith's mark 24.2 cm. barrelsFootnotes:Harvey Walklate Mortimer (1753-1819) was appointed Gunmaker to George III in 1783.
