A good set of four early George III mahogany dining chairs, in the Chippendale taste, having shaped acanthus leaf carved cresting rails above pierced carved baluster splats, with a lancet C-scroll and tracery decoration, over upholstered stuffover seats, all on chamfered square supports united by low H stretchers.One chair with shrinkage split to upright.One with several deep scratches to upright.One with split to top of shoe, also slightly loose with minor wobble, and fine split to centre of splatback (but no loss).Further chair with small split to splat and chip to back of splat, further split to side stretcher.All of god patina, generally very strong and appear all originalAll with typical age and handling wear, minor knocks and scuffs etc.Some minor signs of old inactive woodworm to back of shoe only.Stretchers appear all original.Upholstery good.

A Chippendale Style Mahogany Pull Quarter Striking Bracket Clock with the Carved Mahogany Wall Bracket, signed Peter Clare, Manchr, circa 1770, inverted bell top pediment with carrying handle, side glass panels, pull repeat cord, applied carved mounts, 8-inch arched brass dial with a silvered chapter ring, dial centre with a mock pendulum aperture, and date dial, arch with strike/silent selection, twin fusee movement with an anchor escapement, pull quarter striking on two bells and a further bell for the hours, floral engraved movement backplate signed Peter Clare Manchr, dial and movement circa 1770, later case and wall bracket 20.08.19 Later case with small scratches and small cracks in parts, top left hand side applied mount is loose and needs securing, minor chips in parts, case is dirty in parts, dial is discoloured and with scratches, movement needs cleaning, later back cock and a later pendulum, dial and movement circa 1770, later case and wall bracket, wall bracket with with scratches and small chips. Bracket with minor mouldings missing.

Henry Hindley, York, a George III mahogany 'Chinese Chippendale' longcase clock, the case very similar to a design in Chippendale's Director, the pagoda top hood with 12inch arched signed silvered one-piece dial, 4 pillar movement, the tapering trunk with full length door upon a stepped moulded front plinth, 271cm high Provenance: Mawley Hall, Shropshire Literature: The case design published as plate CXXXVI in the 1754 and 1755 editions of Chippendale's Director. Henry Hindley (1701-1771), a fine and ingenious clockmaker, also created the world’s first telescope powered by a precision clock movement, enabling the telescope to remain fixed on its subject without constant adjustment because of the earth’s rotation (Collection Science Museum, London).ConditionReluctant to keep ticking. Strikes correctly when hands are advanced. One piece hood.
A set of ten mahogany dining chairs, in George III style, second half 19th century, directly after a design by Thomas Chippendale, incorporating two armchairs, each shaped top rail centred by a patera motif, above a pierced lyre shaped splat, the drop in padded seat above tapering cabriole legs terminating in claw on ball feet at the front A closely related set of chairs was designed by Robert Adam for Osterley Park, Isleworth. Thomas Chippendale later used this design for the dining chairs at Nostell Priory, Yorkshire and Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire.
