Burns, by whom sold Sotheby's 20 March 1963, lot 168;Collection of Mark Birley, Annabel's Club, London. Dr. Richard Guy was an authority on the treatment of cancer in the mid eighteenth century. He advocated non-surgical approaches, using a series of medicines to attack tumors especially in breast and maxillofacial cancers. In 1762 he published Practical Observations on Cancers and Disorders of the Breast, the work alluded to on the label, which discussed the use of medications to combat breast cancer, and claimed over one hundred successful cures without surgery. In March 1767, the year of his death, he had published a letter in The London Magazine (p. 116) on the treatment of facial cancer. Barron himself was a celebrated pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds. A GEORGE III GUADELOUPE MAHOGANY HEXAGONAL TRIPOD TABLEPOSSIBLY BY THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1765The finely figured and crossbanded top and having a torus moulded edge supported on a tapering column with wrythen knop, on cabriole legs 71cm high, the top 69cm diameterProvenance:Private collection LondonIn 1764 Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) supplied two related tables, veneered in amber-coloured 'Guadelupe' mahogany to Sir Lawrence Dundas for his London mansion in Arlington Street, London (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. I, pp. 156 and 159 and vol. II, fig. 470). Condition Report: Table with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. Some neatly executed old veneer repairs. The veneers to the edge of the top appears to be an exotic timber. Some fading and colour variations to the top, as to be expected with age. A 19th century Chippendale style carved giltwood wall mirror, with foliate scroll frame and rectangular bevelled plate, width 78cm, height 154cm***CONDITION REPORT***Looks to date to the late 19th century but is possibly early 20th century, frame has a few scattered small cracks and rubbing to the gilding but overall in fair order, glass plate looks to be a later replacement but is in good condition.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
