In the Manner of Thomas Chippendale Mahogany serpentine chest on chest with Greek key decoration to the top above turned finials and seven long graduated drawers separated by a pull-out slide, flanked by geometric mouldings, stamped with numbers 156141, 32.304 to the reverse, 176.5cm high, 89.5cm wide and 66cm deep.CONDITION REPORT: The handles are metal, not brass.  There are filled-in small holes to the top part.  There are losses of mahogany, mainly to the base of the lower chest and to both sides of the base.  There are minor surface scratches and colour fading throughout.  There is a minor crack in the wood on the left hand side.

Mortimer, London, Gun-Maker To His Majesty, Late 18th Century Expertly reconverted from percussion, with rebrowned twist octagonal sighted barrels each signed in full in capitals along the top flat and engraved with a line of beadwork at the rear, border engraved tangs each fitted with a back-sight and decorated with a martial trophy and foliage, border engraved flat bevelled detented locks each with re-engraved signature and decorated with a martial trophy on the stepped tail, engraved safety-catches (one repaired), figured full stocks (fore-ends each with small splits at the muzzle) one with some bruising and loss of lacquer on the side-flat) each with chequered rounded butt, blued steel mounts (some loss of finish) comprising trigger-guards in the French fashion each with double pineapple finial and decorated with a large flower-head on the bow, turned ramrod-pipes, adjustable set triggers, and original ramrod (the other replaced) with iron worm and threaded powder-measure (two barrel-bolts broken): in their contemporary oak case (one compartment lid replaced) fitted and lined in dark brown velvet with some accessories including three-way powder-flask, the body covered in black leather (minor old damage), the interior of the lid with rare maker's illustrated trade label for Garnet Terry, the exterior of the lid (one corner chipped, minor old splits) with replacement brass carrying handle of Chippendale form, London proof marks and Mortimer's barrelsmith's mark 24.7 cm. barrels Footnotes: Harvey Walklate 1 Mortimer (1753-1819) was appointed Gunmaker to George III in 1783. He was at 89 Fleet Street, London, between 1782 and 1799, and was Contractor to the East India Company from 1796 until 1806.
