A George III gilt gesso and carved wood wall mirror. In the Chinese Chippendale taste, the galleried pagoda top with scrolls, and waterfalls above a central plate flanked by two small side plates, with two further pagodas with internal steps, the base with a later leaf moulded rail, height 98cm, width 53cm.

It served as the Revolutionary Headquarters of General George Washington from 20th October until 2nd November, 1777.Marlborough or ‘Marlboro’ square legs were popular in eighteenth century American bedsteads. The tapered square section of the Marlborough legs offer themselves as sturdy pedestals to the pillars of the bed. The term was first recorded in the Bristol Journal in 1783, ‘For Sale. A neat Mahogany Marlboro Bedstead’. However, this style of square leg ostensibly takes its name from George Spencer, the 4th Duke of Marlborough, to whom William Ince and John Mayhew dedicated their book The Universal System of Household Furniture (1759-62). A similar fourposter bed from Philadelphia is part of the Winterthur Museum collection. An 18th Century carved giltwood and gesso framed wall mirror in the Chinese Chippendale taste, the oval plate within a multiple plate border and C scroll and acanthus framework surmounted a waterfall grotto flanked by two phoenix with spread wings surmounted by an urn of flowers, oak leaves and acorns 180 cm high x 98 cm wide CONDITION REPORTS The overall condition appears to be "country house" good though clearly some signs of old restoration and re-painting in several areas including the right leg of the left bird - wired and re-painted. Right bird appears to have had wing damaged and repaired at some point in the past. The top finial is removable. See images for further detail of gilding and cracking, loss, etc. The plates appear to be original with silver spotted in several areas and certainly a grey-ish colour throughout. Again, see images for further detail. The back is covered with a hard board panel which may be there for support for the main structure so has not been removed for fear of causing any damage. A giltwood overmantel mirror, late 19th Century, of Chippendale design, the central plate surrounded by marginal plates, the frame carved with C-scrolls, foliage, rocaille and hung with flowerheads, the shaped cresting with double C-scroll and foliate central motif flanked by ho ho birds, 133cm high, 157cm wideWe believe the main plate is original, possible replacement to side marginal plates, gilding overall in fair condition with some areas rubbed, minor chips, several old restorations to carved vines and mouldings, a few gesso chips and cracks, crack to the left upper scroll moulding bar, loss to one of the left hand leaves on moulding, wings of hoho birds pinned and a little loose, tail feather of right hoho bird with small loss, a few losses to carved crest.
