A Victorian silver cream jug of bluster form, having a conforming Chippendale style rim terminating into a pointed spout, opposed by a scroll handle with engraved floral decoration to body and vacant circular cartouche, raised on three scroll feet, rubbed marks for possibly London between 1856-1875, indistinct makers mark, 195g Condition report: Good overall condition with some general surface wear. A few small dents to the body and handle but does not take away from the overall appearance. Feet are slightly bent so do not sit flat to a surface. Some push through to the interior from the legs.

There are some further scuffs to the verso. The rear right leg has some traces of glue, but no evident sign of repair. The moulding to the rear seat rail is missing. See further images.

It served as the Revolutionary Headquarters of General George Washington from 20th October until 2nd November, 1777.Marlborough or ‘Marlboro’ square legs were popular in eighteenth century American bedsteads. The tapered square section of the Marlborough legs offer themselves as sturdy pedestals to the pillars of the bed. The term was first recorded in the Bristol Journal in 1783, ‘For Sale. A neat Mahogany Marlboro Bedstead’. However, this style of square leg ostensibly takes its name from George Spencer, the 4th Duke of Marlborough, to whom William Ince and John Mayhew dedicated their book The Universal System of Household Furniture (1759-62).
