A PAIR OF GEORGE II AND LATER CARVED PINE EAGLE CONSOLE TABLES IN THE MANNER OF FRANCIS BRODIE MID-18TH CENTURY AND LATER each with a breche violette marble top above a Greek key and leaf carved frieze, the eagle support with outstretched wings, standing on rockwork, on a ribbon and floret carved plinth base, probably originally painted, slight differences to carving, the tops re-constructed, with later iron rod supports (2) 92.2cm high, 96cm wide, 49.5cm deep CATALOGUE NOTE The design for this type of 'Roman' pier table has historically been associated with the eminent English architect and furniture designer William Kent (1685-1748) and this design was most popular during the 1730s-1750s throughout England and Scotland. A related table is illustrated in the 1739 tradesheet by the Edinburgh cabinetmaker Francis Brodie. In the same year he supplied 'a marble table supported by and eagle, gilt in burnished gold' to the Duke of Gordon. See F. A good Regency revival mahogany breakfront console table. The console being raised on square tapering legs with a series of drawers to the frieze having a breakfront centre. The top with strung inlaid borders with crossbanded details elsewhere. Finished with good brass handles on chased backplates. Measures 76 x 176 x 42 cm.
