Smart Obsidian Black Cosworth-powered 190E, ex-Lotus F1 management car from the Senna era. The Mercedes-Benz 190E (W201) was a compact executive saloon car manufactured from 1982 to 1993. Mercedes had enjoyed some good results competing in rallying, with V8-powered R107 Series Coupés and naturally they were keen to build on this success by taking the 190E on a similar path. Not having the expertise in-house at the time, Mercedes approached British engineering company, Cosworth, to develop a competitive engine for the rally car, however this project took off just as the Audi Quattro, with its all-wheel drive and turbocharger, was launched, making the 2.3 16v appear somewhat outclassed. With a continued desire for the 190 to succeed in high-profile motorsport and also now a state-of-the-art engine with which to do it, Mercedes turned to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) (German Touring Car Championship) motorsport series instead. However, cars racing in this championship had to be based on a road-going model, a minimum number of which had been sold to the public, so Mercedes, therefore, had to put the 190 into series-production with a detuned version of the Cosworth engine. This high-performance model was known as the 190E 2.3-16 and debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1983. In road-going trim, the 2.3-litre 16-valve engine produced 185bhp with acceleration from 0-62mph in less than eight seconds and a top speed of 143mph. The engine is considered to be remarkably flexible with a very flat torque curve and a wide powerband. There were other notable changes over the standard 190 including the bodykit which reduced the drag coefficient to 0.32, one of the lowest CD values on a four-door saloon at the time, whilst also reducing lift at speed. The steering ratio was quicker and the steering wheel smaller than that on other 190s, whilst the fuel tank was enlarged from 55 to 70 litres. The Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox was unique to the 16-valve and featured a 'racing' gear pattern with a 'dog-leg' first gear. An oil cooler was fitted to ensure sufficient oil cooling for the inevitable track use for which many of these cars were destined. The strictly four-seat interior featured Recaro sports seats with strong side bolsters for front and rear passengers and three extra dials, an oil temperature gauge, stopwatch and voltmeter were included in the centre console. The suspension on 16-valve models is very different from the standard 190. As well as being lower and stiffer, it has quicker dampers, larger anti-roll bars, harder bushes, a limited-slip differential and hydraulic self-levelling suspension (SLS) on the rear, allowing the rear ride height to remain constant even when the car is fully loaded. The car presented here is a very special 1985 Mercedes-Benz (W201) 190E 2.3-16V Cosworth, as it was one of two examples supplied new to Team Lotus International in 1986, this era being a particularly testing and significant time in the team’s history. The 190E was to be used by the management team and drivers, which included Gérard Ducarouge, the legendary car designer, technical director and the figure credited with saving Team Lotus, plus Johnny Dumfries and Ayrton Senna, as drivers. Iconic Auctioneers have it on very good authority, directly from Gérard Ducarouge (before he died in 2015), that he clearly recalled the car, spoke highly of it and stated that it was very much used by all team members at this time.Team Lotus had once stood as the dominant force in Formula 1, achieving victory in 71 World Championship races over 19 seasons. However, by the 1986 season, the team was grappling with the loss of its visionary founder. They were striving to provide their star driver, Ayrton Senna, with a competitive car amidst challenging circumstances. The 98T was the answer and a car that was born in the context of the 1986 F1 regulations, unrestricted by boost limitations, qualifying engines surged past 1,000bhp - the highest power outputs recorded in F1 history. The 1986 season represented the pinnacle of the V6 Turbo Era, defined by adrenaline-fueled racing where wheelspin was commonplace even in fifth gear, and qualifying engines were pushed to their limits - sometimes melting as they returned to the pits. Lotus constructed only four 98T cars for the 1986 season, designated chassis numbers one through four. Senna drove chassis #4 in the final eight races, including the legendary Australian Grand Prix, forever etched in F1 history for its dramatic conclusion. This actual 190E was right in the heart of the action at this time, conveying significant team members to meetings, races and no doubt to the social occasions for which the mid-1980s were famous. This early ownership (Team Lotus subsequently sold on the 190E in March 1989 – according to a Team Lotus headed note-paper invoice, in the car’s history file) ensured the car was dutifully cared for, as you’d expect from an F1 team. It has gone on to have a few more enthusiast-owners over the years, each maintaining it to a high level. It is accompanied by a full-service history that includes old bills, MOTs and tax discs. More recently, in December 2020, the car has had its floors, sills and wheel arches repaired professionally. Overall, this is a very good and solid example that is presented in excellent condition, belying its 130,000 miles and is also reported to be running and driving extremely well. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a 190E Cosworth with significant Team Lotus history, a time when the motorsport legend, Senna, was making his way in F1 and this car was there to witness it.Specification Make: MERCEDES-BENZ Model: 190E 2.3-16V COSWORTH Year: 1985 Chassis Number: 2010342F148553 Registration Number: C502 BEX Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 10298320008187 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 130000 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images
**Please note the registration number for this car is LB52 XBM.**Beautifully presented first generation Vanquish 2+2 with less than 27,000 miles. An entirely new Aston Martin for the 21st Century, the V12-engined Vanquish Coupé debuted at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2001. Aston Martin's first power unit of its type, the 5.9-litre, 48-valve, V12 engine (first seen in the DB7 V12 Vantage) developed 460bhp at 6,800rpm, with 400lb/ft of torque available at 5,500 revs. The 6-speed gearbox was controlled by F1-style paddles and could be operated in either of two modes: fully manual or computer-controlled automatic, with a Sport setting available on both. The inventory of standard equipment included almost everything the discerning connoisseur could wish for, while the performance - 190mph and 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds – placed the Vanquish firmly in the supercar class. Dominated by an imposing aluminium centre console, the interior featured Connolly leather upholstery and Wilton carpeting, emphasising the Aston Martin heritage, for despite its advanced specification, the Vanquish was built like all other Astons before it - one at a time and by hand. This superb example was supplied new by Grange Motors in 2002 and is exquisitely finished in Forest Green with matching green leather upholstery and was originally optioned from the factory with 2+2 seating, a fire extinguisher, heated front screen, upgraded wing mirrors and front stone guards.Maintained by Aston Martin Works up until 2011, the car was acquired by our late vendor, a friend of Iconic Auctioneers owner, Nick Whale, in that year and he continued to have the car fastidiously maintained by Aston specialists, Bamford Rose, all the way up to his very sad passing in 2020. Since then, the Vanquish has been professionally stored with only occasional use by his widow and consequently still presents superbly. The Aston is accompanied by a comprehensive service and MOT history corroborating the indicated mileage of 26,900 and the condition of the car remains exceptional, as does the value for money that it represents today.NB: The Cherished Registration Number illustrated in our images, PES 51, does not form part of the sale but is available in our automobilia sale - lot 323.SpecificationMake: ASTON MARTINModel: VANQUISHYear: 2002Chassis Number: SCFAX133X2B500411Registration Number: TBATransmission: Paddle ShiftEngine Number: AM3/00451Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 26732 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Green LeatherClick here for more details and images
A simply superb UK/RHD 930 LE, the highly sought after 'ultimate 930' model; 'Colour to Sample' paintwork and interior, just 20,000 miles, extensive service history and in outstanding condition. First launched at the 1973 Paris Auto Show with production commencing in 1975, the Porsche 911 (930) Turbo was a genuine Supercar which defined both the 1970s and 1980s and was one of the fastest production cars available at that time. The basic engine underpinnings came from the Carrera 2.7RS which was increased to 3-litres (eventually 3.3-litres) and of course, turbocharged with technology gleaned from Porsche's 917/30 Can-Am programme. The brakes were also derived directly from the 917. The bodywork received special treatment resulting in one of the most aggressive looking Porsches ever made with its wide arches and impressive rear 'Tea-tray' spoiler. In 1989, before production of the 911 (930) Turbo was discontinued, Porsche marked the occasion by creating a very special, right-hand drive, limited edition 930 LE - the ultimate Turbo, produced as the last hurrah to a turbo charged era. Starting out as a standard 3.3-litre model, the cars were then sent to the exclusive team at Zuffenhausen who built each example by hand. With just 53 of these cars produced, one for each UK dealership in 1989, a host of bespoke no-cost options were offered including colour-coded wheels, top-tinted windscreen, a choice of colours for interior and exterior, rear-quarter air intake ducts, electric sunroof, heated multi-adjust electric seats, electric sunroof and gold ‘Turbo’ lettering stitched behind the seat. They also came fitted with leather throughout, extending over the seats, dash, centre console and door trims. Topped-off with a 3-spoke steering wheel with a special Porsche crest badge in gold, a feature which is echoed on top of the gear knob, plus a gold plaque with '911 Turbo, 1975-1989 Limited Edition Model' engraving - as recognition of the LE's place in Porsche 911 history.Further features include electrically adjustable Sports seats with heating, electric tilt and slide sunroof, climate control, Becker Mexico radio/CD, rear wiper, and a 180mph speedometer. On the outside, the LE cars are visually very striking with the poster pin-up wide bodywork and big rear wing. The side intake strakes and deep front spoiler (with additional oil cooler) follow the styling of the low-build (Flachbau) SE model. Similarly, the LE utilises the 330bhp 3.3-litre engine of the SE, hence a larger turbo charger, higher lift camshafts, higher boost pressure, larger intercooler and quad exhaust system and the transmission is the G50 5-speed manual gearbox with short shift and the optional M220 limited-slip diff.At the time of production, Porsche had no plans to turbocharge the incoming 964, so it was believed that the LE would indeed be the final forced induction model to leave the Stuttgart factory. The price was an eye-watering £84,500, a full 50% more than the average house price at the time! The car presented here is one of those 53 examples, a 1989 Porsche 911 (930) LE which was delivered new via Porsche Centre JCT Brooklands, being first registered on 24th August 1989. Being such a ‘halo model’ for the marque, this car went one stage further and was specified with ‘Colour to Sample’ paintwork (in this case Gletscherblau Metallic) and interior which, according to Porsche, means ‘an exclusive option that opens up a virtually limitless palette of colours for your Porsche’Being an LE, the car’s Optional Equipment list runs to over 20 items – Porsche literally gave an LE the 'works' (see the attached image of the Porsche COE for the full list), the highlights being: the now iconic LE rear intake ducts, an additional oil cooler, modified engine 930/66, limited-slip differential, and sports seats. This exceptional Porsche has only covered 19,992 miles from new, verified by the car’s accompanying original servicing booklet, routinely carried out (with corresponding stamps) up to 18,537 miles and by numerous old MOT Certificates. In 2012/13 the car (then with 19,629 miles) was sold by Border Reivers, the UK’s largest supplier of classic Porsches and Scotland’s oldest independent classic Porsche dealer. It has since formed part of a significant Collection of very special cars, sharing a professional storage facility with the great and the good. A change of circumstances now mean that this highly rated Porsche is available once again. In preparation for sale, a comprehensive recommissioning service was lavished on the car, costing some £5,600.Iconic Auctioneers (formerly Silverstone Auctions) have been privileged to offer and sell a few 930 LE examples over the years - the last one, with 25,000 miles, achieved £240,000 - but you can see why – all the ingredients are there. This rare Turbo LE was the culmination of the 930 Turbo's 14 years of production and as a result, is probably the best developed iteration of this model, making it highly collectible today. This is one of the best Turbo LEs we’ve had the pleasure of offering and we urge you to come and see the car in the metal.Specification Make: PORSCHE Model: 911 930 TURBO LE Year: 1989 Chassis Number: WP0ZZZ93ZKS000826 Registration Number: G142 JUA Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 67K00959 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 19977 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
The rarest Production Porsche. One of 13 made worldwide, one of two in right-hand drive and the only right-hand drive car in the UK. On offer here is quite simply the rarest production Porsche ever built and is a unique opportunity in this country. This 911 Club Coupé is one of just 13 cars built, one of two right-hand drive examples and the only car to be delivered to the UK (the other right-hand drive car went to Hong Kong). The Club Coupé is a unique model created to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the first Porsche Club. The first club specifically for Porsche owners was originally known as the Westfalischer Porsche Club Hohensyburg and was set up in May 1952, just four years after the first 356 rolled off the production line, by a group of enthusiasts. There were 13 original members and consequently it seemed appropriate to build the same number of cars out of respect to those early owners who were so excited about their new cars that they got together to share their enthusiasm, little knowing what they had started.Of the 13 cars, only 12 were available for sale as Porsche themselves decided to keep one to be displayed at the Porsche Museum. Porsche regularly display their own example and it was recently presented at the launch of the 992.2 in Spain.Revered by Porsche collectors, over 50% have been retained by their original owners and Porsche have run rallies specifically for those select few owners. A film on YouTube, 'Rallye 911 Club Coupe La passion continue', will show what lies ahead for the purchaser. To make the ordering process for the remaining 12 a little fairer, the company ran a lottery system, which was opened on 16th June 2012, with each of the 12 lucky winners having their name engraved on a switch-panel trim strip. They were handed over at a dinner in Stuttgart hosted by Wolfgang Porsche. The Museum printed a limited run of 250 books dedicated to the story and documenting the build process, a copy of which will accompany the car.The stunning paint finish was described as Brewster Green and the vendor later ordered a new 911GTS to match for daily use. When parked next to each other, it was clear that the Club Coupé was a completely different colour. Further research with the Factory revealed that it was known internally as 'Family Green', a colour reserved exclusively for Porsche family members and as worn by Wolfgang Porsche's personal 993 Turbo S which is displayed at the Porsche Museum. A shade not offered nor available anywhere else adding to the car’s unrepeatable exclusivityMileage at the time of cataloguing was 7,918 in the hands of its three previous owners and the car has been well maintained by Porsche main dealers in recent years as you might expect with such a special 911. Offered from the Property of a Gentleman Collection, a fully restored example of the glorious Escort MkII RS2000 Custom and offering incredible value at this estimate. It was back in 1970 that Ford introduced their Rally Sport models - the RS range. Originally designed as a way of building limited numbers of homologation specials for serious competition use, it soon grew into a major marketing opportunity and one that Ford grabbed with both hands. By 1976, when the RS2000 Mk2 was launched, the term 'RS' had grown to mean something a bit special.Unlike the Mk1 Escort which was designed by Ford of Great Britain, the Mk2 was a much more sophisticated design that was jointly developed with Ford of Germany. Based on a standard Mk2 two-door saloon shell, the RS2000 used the familiar 2-litre, inline four-cylinder, SOHC Pinto engine mounted longitudinally in the bay driving the rear wheels. A single, twin-venturi 32/36 DGAV Weber carburettor was fitted with the option of a 'Group 1' dual Weber 40DCNF or IDF set up. The front suspension used independent MacPherson struts with an anti-roll bar and, at the rear, traditional leaf springs with telescopic dampers were utilised. Front-mounted discs and rear drums were used and 4-spoke alloy wheels came as standard. Its biggest distinguishing feature was a 'droop snoot' polyurethane nose housing four headlamps which gave it a rather aggressive look. The new car was capable of 110mph with 0-60mph taking 8.9 seconds, not too shabby in 1976 and which, combined with the car's distinctive looks and that shiny RS badge, set Ford's showroom doors swinging. In late 1978, the Custom Pack became an option and included Fishnet Recaro seats, full door cards, clock and pod centre console, 6J x 13" alloys, boot carpet, remote drivers door mirror and the back panel around the rear lights was painted black. This absolutely superb example of this highly sought after British classic was first registered on 8th December 1977. Finished in Midnight Blue with a black interior this RS2000 Custom has been fully restored, which appears to have been completed to a very high standard, in 2021. This matching numbers Ford has only covered some 300 miles since restoration and therefore needs to be handled with care over the short term as everything is still tight on the vehicle. One of 100 made worldwide and one of only 28 UK-delivered, right-hand drive examples. Unveiled by Aston Martin in 2015 as 'the most potent and uncompromising Vantage to date' the Vantage GT12 was significantly re-engineered from a standard V12 S. 100kg was shed through the extensive use of carbon fibre body panels, bonnet, bumpers and front wings. With production limited to just 100 examples worldwide, of which 28 were UK right-hand drive, the new model incorporated much of what had been learned from their successful GT racing programme.Power from the 6-litre V12 was increased from 550 to 592bhp and the chassis updated including a wider track and large carbon-ceramic brake discs. The 7-speed sport-shift transmission was also updated for faster gear changes, while downforce to the rear wing, front splitter, rear diffuser and side skirts was increased by a factor of seven.Finished in China Grey with a Grey Blend Alcantara/Californian Poppy interior, this is one of only 28 UK-supplied, right-hand drive examples and had covered 10,579 miles at the time of cataloguing. The GT12 has formed part of our vendor's private Collection since 2019 and boasts a full Aston Martin service history with the most recent, a six year service, on 9th July 2024.The car was specified new with the following options: Alarm System: Alarm Upgrade Volumetric & Tilt Sensors Audio System: Aston Martin 700W Premium AudioBadge Bonnet/Decklid: Bright Chrome (Black Wings Infill)Brake Calipers: OrangeCentre Console: Satin CarbonFacia Trim (Trim Inlay): Facia Trim - Full Length Twill Carbon Front Badge: GT12 Bonnet LouvreFront Grille: CarbonGearbox Type: 7-Speed Sportshift IIIGraphics Pack: FullHandbook Language: EnglishHeadlamps: Black BezelIP Language: EnglishKeyfob Cover: Leather Ecu PouchPaddle shifts: Black Paddleshift - Match To Seat -StripeParcel Shelf: Fit Parcel ShelfParking Cameras: Reversing CameraQ Graphics Pack: Orange Q Graphics PackRear Quarter/Window: PolycarbonateRoof Panel: Carbon FibreSeat Belts: Warm CharcoalSeat Embroidery: Headrest Embroidery - Gt12 LogoSeat Type: Lightweight Manual SeatSeating Arrangement: 2 SeaterSpecial Feature: QBy Aston MartinSteering Wheel Type: Standard Steering WheelTail Lamps: Clear Rear LampsTailgate Finish: CarbonWheels: 7Sp Satin Black Magnesium Centre LockWindow Surround Finisher: Black Side Window FinisherWith limited production numbers, inspiration from the racing team, impressive performance and a soundtrack hard to match, this is a highly sought-after and collectable model and one that we highly recommend coming to see at the NEC.Our vendor has generously agreed to include the Cherished Registration number, GT12 VAN, as part of the sale.Specification Make: ASTON MARTIN Model: GT12 VANTAGE Year: 2015 Chassis Number: SCFGJBJY0GGS62373 Registration Number: GT12 VAN Transmission: Semi-Automatic Engine Number: AM57/43013 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 10579 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
Just two registered keepers, 28,425 miles from new and delightfully original. It was back in 1970 that Ford introduced their Rally Sport models - the RS range. Originally designed as a way of building limited numbers of homologation specials for serious competition use, it soon grew into a major marketing opportunity and one that Ford grabbed with both hands. By 1976, when the RS2000 Mk2 was launched, the term RS had grown to mean something a bit special. In late 1978, the 'Custom Pack' became an option and included the following; 'Fishnet' Recaro seats, full door cards, clock and pod centre console, 6J x 13" alloys, boot carpet, remote drivers door mirror and the back panel around the rear lights was painted black. The key word to describe this car is originality. It still retains all the original body panels and glass and has been looked after extraordinarily well throughout its life. Although it has been cherished by a number of aficionados with an eye for originality, astonishingly it still shows as only 'One former keeper'. Our respected Ford collector vendor acquired the car back in 2021 and has professionally housed it ever since within his Collection and unregistered to him. Showing just 28,425 miles from new, a figure that is corroborated by the car’s MOT history, it drives really well today and is surely one of the best unrestored examples available. When supplied new to Breeze of Amble, Morpeth on 6th June 1980, the owner was the Managing Director of a Ford dealership and he immediately treated the car to an application of Dinitrol, a type of Waxoyl protection, still visible today and which has definitely helped protect the bodywork from any rust or corrosion. The original Custom-spec included some dealer-fitted options when new:Rear Ford mud flapsFront Ford carpet matsGlass sunroofFront wheel-arch liners‘Group 1’ vented discs, calipers and compatible brake compensating valveRear seatbeltsJanspeed stainless-steel exhaust and manifoldThe car shines in all the right areas - the spare wheel and tyre are original and unused, as are the ashtray and cigar lighter and one key fits all the locks as when new. Coming to the sale with a fresh MOT until October 2025 and a good history file, this is a great opportunity to own a splendidly original and unmolested example of the rarer Custom version of a true Ford 1980s icon.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT Year: 1980 Chassis Number: GCATAG005340 Registration Number: DBB 134V Transmission: Manual Engine Number: AG00534 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 28425 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
Superb example of the ever popular R107 500SL, beautifully presented with just 13,000 miles. It really is hard to believe that the R107 Mercedes SL is now over 50 years old, yet in 1971 this new chapter in the history of the SL sports car began. It was the first SL with a V8 engine, it had a thoroughly modern new design. It was a self-confident motor car - sporty yet luxurious and quick yet comfortable. In many ways it was and remains the perfect convertible. As is the way with all thing Mercedes-Benz, the new SL featured a number of safety-related technical innovations during its development such as defined crumple zones, high-strength steels in the A-pillars, a windscreen frame with bonded glass, padded surfaces and deformable elements in the interior. From March 1980, ABS was available and from January 1982, a driver’s airbag and belt tensioners. The ultimate engine choice in Europe was to be found with the all-alloy overhead-camshaft V8 500SL of 1980, with 240bhp available (bearing in mind a Porsche 911 offered a ‘mere’ 204bhp at the time). Over time, the interiors became even more luxurious, the car’s weight was reduced with new alloy bonnets and boot lids and the suspension and brakes continued to be developed until it was replaced by the R129 in 1989. The 'R107' SL was a classic almost as soon as it ended its 18 year production run and today they make perfectly usable daily drivers, especially when, as with this example, they come with a factory hardtop.Finished in Smoke Silver with an Anthracite leather interior and a black mohair soft top, this extremely low-mileage example displays just over 13,000 miles from new. Understood to have been originally ordered for the UK market, the car was actually supplied new to Japan, from whence it returned in 2015. In 2020, it underwent a workshop inspection which included an engine compression test and full service. Our vendor, having acquired the car around three years ago, commenced a recommissioning which included a comprehensive oil and filter service, belts, water pump, gearbox oil and filter, front shaft and pump seals and a complete replacement stainless steel exhaust system. He also chose to replace the boot lid, preferring the simple lines without the spoiler fitted upon purchase, though the original is available to the next keeper if they wish. A period-style Blaupunkt Stereo has been fitted along with replacement dash and centre console trim as the car had been retro-fitted with a poor AC system that he has sensibly removed. The car’s new build record lists that it was supplied with a number of options including a limited-slip differential and anti-lock braking system. Our vendor confidently states that this is a car in which he could happily trust to jump in and set off on a journey of hundreds of miles tomorrow. The car is accompanied by its matching hardtop, a number of invoices and old MOTs, various Japanese service records, an original sales brochure and a book on the SL 107 series cars. This is an SL that could easily fit within any Collection or equally be enjoyed on the show field or international touring.Specification Make: MERCEDES Model: R107 500SL Year: 1986 Chassis Number: WDB1070462A021658 Registration Number: C554 CTR Transmission: Automatic Engine Number: 117962-22004967 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 13000 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Anthracite LeatherClick here for more details and images
One of the defining hot hatches of the 1990s, this remarkably original, first generation Clio Williams has covered just 9,331 miles from new. It’s the early 1990s and the 1.8-litre Clio 16v is locked in combat for hot hatch glory with the ageing Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9. It’s a better car by many objective criteria, but not a convincingly faster one and in the eyes of many, the GTi still holds the crown. It took a truly special car to convincingly wrestle supremacy away from Peugeot, to really bury the old-timer and to refine the class in the process. That car was the Clio Williams.Sold with the compelling marketing strategy of an F1 team association, the Williams was actually an 'homologation special' in the familiar mould. It was built because RenaultSport wanted to go rallying and the class maximum displacement stood at 2-litres. Given this was still the era of homologation into 'Classes' A and 'N', Renault simply had to build 2,500 road cars to qualify, although it would eventually build many more. The initial production run of the Clio Williams was limited to just 5,400 examples, of which only 390 arrived in the UK.The suspension used a reinforced front subframe borrowed from the Clio Cup racer plus uprated springs, dampers, rear torsion arms and thicker anti-roll bars. The track was increased by 34mm and the 7J Speedline alloys were 0.5" wider than the 16v’s and distinctively gold. The gearbox was stronger too, with revised ratios. There was just one exterior colour offered for the first generation of Williams – '449' Metallic Sports Blue – and the cumulative effect of body (already blistered of arch, front, and rear and bulging of bonnet from the 16v), paint and those golden wheels was as close to hot hatch perfection as many felt it was possible to get.Codenamed 'F7R' and developed from the 16v’s 137bhp F7P unit, the new engine featured a longer stroke and bigger bore size and benefitted from a stronger crankshaft plus new pistons, camshafts and conrods with bigger valves and a lightweight exhaust manifold. Output was now 148bhp at 6,100rpm and 126lb/ft at 4,500rpm, not enormous by today's standards but 85% of the torque was available from 2,500rpm and the car only weighed 981kg. The factory specification included central locking, electric windows, and blue-faced instrument dials with three co-ordinating blue auxiliary read-outs atop the centre console displaying the oil level, temperature and pressure – all very purposeful.#0181 is one of the finest Clio Williams to come to the market for a very long time with just 9,331 miles from new and with the original owner for nearly 25 years. Ordered new by him from Arlington Renault of Yeovil in August 1993, it arrived from the factory and was registered in February 1994. Testament to his caring ownership, the Clio is accompanied by the most comprehensive of history files which includes the original sales receipt, a promotional leaflet with a handwritten deposit receipt on it, tax discs and three MOTs over its limited use between dry storage. The inventory includes all driver manuals, two sets of keys and the obligatory Gemini Alarm fobs required in the day to get it insured. The owner also purchased two Williams Renault promotional jackets (M), an F1 RenaultSport World Championship cap and key fob.New tyres were fitted prior to the last MOT test, however the original equipment factory tyres are available should the new owner feel that's important. #0181 still presents as showroom fresh and must be the most original example of the ultimate performance hatchback, a rare opportunity.Specification Make: RENAULT Model: WILLIAMS CLIO Year: 1994 Chassis Number: VF1C57M0510863307 Registration Number: L471 NYD Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 00C5139 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 9331 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlueClick here for more details and images
