Over the course of their journey, Pavel and Maria acquired paintings, sculptures, and other objets d'art for their new residence, Pavlovsk Palace. They also purchased books, thereby enriching Pavel’s extensive library, to which Nicolay himself acted as librarian. It is unclear whether the acquisition of the 1773 Furioso took place during their European tour or closer to its date of publication. Notably, the name of the future Tsar does not appear in the previously mentioned list of subscribers. However it is known that during their extensive European tour, Pavel and Maria also visited Ferrara and paid homage at Ariosto’s tomb, so it seems likely this copy was acquired at some point during the tour.Literature: Cohen & De Ricci 95-97; Gaskell 48.
