Fascinating and Substantial WW1 German U-Boat Archive Relating to Heinrich Sander who served on U-113. The U Boat was commissioned in September 1917 and during its career sank 4 ships, in November 1918 after the Armistice it was handed over to the French and the crew became Prisoners of War. Included here is Sander's very detailed Diary for 1917 providing much information on his training and early period on board. During his period as a U-Boatman and in French captivity he wrote many card and letters home to Hameln in Hannover and over 200 are included here (many with POW stamps). A group Photograph of the crew and Officers of UB 59, many with awards is included dated December 1917 (Perhaps he undertook training or a friend is in the group?), Also of interest is the extensive number of coupons and documents relating to the rationing in Germany during WWI and its immediate aftermath. Other documents and POW letters show that Sander was again imprisoned as a POW at the end of WWII in the British zone, hopefully for not too long Unusual archive with considerable research potential given our limited command of written German! Includes box of letters and file of other documents, diary, notebook, cards etc. (2)
