Gastronomy.- Negri Stefano. Elegantissime e Greco Authorum subditorum Translationes, 5 parts in 1, collation: AA4, A-P4, Q6, A-M4, N6, O-X4, Z6; [4], LX; XCIII, [3] ff., title within woodcut border, repeated on four other subtitles, decorated initials, extensive ink annotations in an early hand, contemporary limp boards, spine with original reinforcing, 4to (222 x 160mm.), Milan, Giovanni Castiglione, August 1521. ⁂ First edition, first issue (without the errata) of the collected essays and translations of Greek authors by the prominent hellenist Stefano Negri or Stephanus Niger (1475-1540), a disciple of Demetrius Chalcondyles. The collection includes the Commentarioli in aurea carmina Pythagorae, the Praefationes, devoted by Niger to Homer, Pindar and Titus Livius, and three short writings which had a lasting influence on gastronomic literature: the De victo Pythagorico, the De vino, and the De nimia obsoniorum appetentia. Legatura in pergamena antica con titolo in oro su tassello (sguardie rinnovate). Prima edizione con il commento di Vellutello e le meravigliose incisioni di Marcolini. Frontespizio con marca tipografica, ritratto di Giovan Francesco Caroto al verso, una grande tavola xilografica più volte ripiegata e 29 grandi xilografie a doppia e piena pagina, di cui 4 ripiegate (la grande tavola foderata, piccoli difetti.) Legatura di poco posteriore in pergamena con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Prima edizione di questa opera dedicata alle antichità e all’architettura di Verona, illustrata da grandi xilografie realizzate dal pittore veronese Giovan Francesco Caroto, che raffigurano il teatro romano, altri dettagli architettonici e una carta di Verona su due pagine. An early 19th century Continental faience encrier and cover with flame shaped candle holder finial. Fitted inside with a bust shaped handle, inkwells, desk sander and pen holders. Painted in coloured enamels with trailing leaves and raised on paw feet, 23cm high. Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. Some repair to the finial. Chip to the rim of the cover. Crazed.

A Sancta Flora Cardin. erariique Praefectum, collation: a4A-N4, italic type, full-page woodcut portrait of Muzio Attendolo Sforza to verso of a4, with a related 17th century ink inscription beneath, initial spaces with guide-letters, fine woodcut device of Blado at end, lacking final blank, title lightly soiled, some spotting or light foxing, a few small stains, a few ff. lightly browned, 19th century brown straight-grain morocco, gilt, upper joint starting, but holding firm, corners worn, rubbed, small 4to, Rome, [Antonio Blado], November, 1539. ⁂ A good copy of the first edition of this biography of Muzio Attendolo, the founder of the Sforza dynasty, which is rare at auction.
