MURPHY, James.- Plans, elevations, sections and views of the church of Batalha, in the province of Estremadura in Portugal, with the history and description by Fr. Luis de Sousa; with remarks. To which is prefixed an introductory discourse on the principles of Gothic Architecture.- London: I. & J. Taylor, 1795.- [2], II, [2], 61, [1] p.: [27] gravuras; 53 cm.- E., A monumental work, especially appreciated for its magnificent copperplate engravings (burin and etching), of large dimensions, containing the architectural survey of the Monastery of Batalha and some reconstructions. James Murphy (1760-1814), Irish architect and traveller, born in Blackrock (Cork), was in Portugal during the years 1789 and 1790, in the service of William Burton Conyngham, with the mission of studying and drawing the architecture of the Monastery of Batalha. The work includes the following typographic texts: List of subscribers [2 p.]; Preface (II p.); Introduction (p. 1 a 26); A history and description of the Royal Monastery of Batallha... / by Father Luis de Sousa ([2], p. 27 a 61, [1] p.). The engraved sheets are as follows: title; dedication to William Conyngham; five engravings at the end of the introduction; and 20 engravings at the end of the volume, two of which are double-leaf, with the architectural survey. The copy also includes, bound at the end, a small leaflet (4 p.) with a catalogue of architecture books, by the same publisher. The copy, complete (according to the bibliography and the engraving index) and uncropped, is very clean up to the engraving [12] (The effigies...) which has a slight semi-circular water stain (of tide), in the upper third, which is accentuated until the last engraving. Half leather binding (single), from the 19th century, with the original Whatman paper endpapers. Duarte de Sousa, 510.

In addition to the first printed matter 'Unser Programm', the artists conceived a leaflet for which Kirchner produces three different woodcuts. Here the term 'Künstlergemeinschaft“(artist community) was discarded and changed to 'Künstlergruppe' (artist group). In addition, Kirchner concentrated on the design of the lettering that should become emblematic for the 'Brücke' artists, framed by a ghostly-looking figure from the front (below) and from behind as well standing on its head (above). A new 'brand' was created. [MvL] Called up: December 10, 2022 - ca. 16.32 h +/- 20 min. This lot can be purchased subject to differential or regular taxation.

Kirchner cut the woodcut again, a landscape scene with a bridge over a body of water in the distance, which he frames with the group's lettering. The motif with the group's name is clearly highlighted here and is suitable for printing on a flyleaf, for example. Thus, the artists used this woodcut for the first issues of their 'Program', a printed folding card. [MvL] Called up: December 10, 2022 - ca. 16.36 h +/- 20 min. Secret Orders Issued To Military Officers - Known as ''The Castle Document'', leaflet 7 1/2" x 5", one side only, April 1916 ''The following precautionary measures have been sanctioned by the Irish Office on the recommendation of the General Officer Commanding the Forces in Ireland ... .'' - As circulated by P.J. Little, ed. New Ireland office 13 Fleet Street, Dublin, 15 April, 1916. An article published in An t-?glac -The Irish Volunteer) on 8 April 1916 called for Volunteer manoeuvres on Easter Sunday 23 April 1916. On Wednesday,15 April 1916, the IRB forged a notice supposedly decoded from a communication emanating from Dublin Castle. It was printed on a hand press by Joseph Plunkett and Rory O'Connor at Larkfield House, Plunkett's home off the Lower Kimmage Road. It excluded punctuation marks and capitalisation due to the poor supply of printing font available to them. Known as the 'Castle Document', apparently ordering the execution of Eoin Mac Neil, arrest of Volunteer leaders and occupation of Dublin by the British Army, it was shown to MacNeill. He was then easily persuaded to give an order to the Irish Volunteers 'to resist any British action.' This was the order that the IRB needed to go ahead with the Rising. On 19 April 1916 Alderman Tom Kelly read the ''Castle Order'' to a meeting of Dublin Corporation. The Nationalist weekly paper, New Ireland, edited by Patrick J. Little (1884-1963), published the text of the document, a single sheet handbill entitled ''Secret Orders issued to Military Officers'' in its issue for Saturday 22 April 1916 (vol. II no. 49), just two days before the Easter Rising began. However MacNeill discovered, sometime around 20 April that the 'Castle Document' was a fake. He put an advertisement in the Irish Independent newspaper which told all volunteers that 'No parades, marches or other movements of the Volunteers will take place.' This cancellation caused the IRB to move back the rebellion one day to Easter Monday - 24 April, 1916. Many rural Volunteers, who had come to town on Sunday only to hear the rebellion was cancelled, returned home. Although all the Rising's leaders now realised that they were doomed, they still went ahead with the plans for rebellion. There are only one or two recorded copies of this important document in public records. Very few can have survived as the printing would appear to have been small and the method of distribution via newspapers aborted. None of the textbook histories actually quote from it but rather paraphrase its content.. In terms of this identification, the only full printing of this was in the last issue of New Ireland before its suppression just prior to the Rising. The only reproduction of the handbill accompanied the Irish Press article of January 4 1937 by Hanna Sheehy Skeffington. Colm ? Lochlainn gave it an incorrect caption title in his short piece on Joseph Mary Plunkett as a printer, published in The Irish Book Lover for March 1954. Charles Townshend wrote in Easter 1916: The Irish Rebellion: ''There had been a scare from a leaked Dublin Castle document apparently planning for repressive measures to be taken in the event of introducing conscription. This led to the ramping up of tension and expectation, and seemed to offer an excuse to start the rebellion on Easter Sunday. Eoin MacNeill, of course, countermanded the orders; but as things turned out, he was not fully in control, and the rebellion went ahead, though on a smaller scale, on Easter Monday instead.'' A little browned, but a good copy of a Scarce and Vulnerable Item. (1)

An important archive, including significant manuscript material, relating to a man who took part in what was probably the most significant 1916 engagement outside the GPO itself, where British reinforcements trying to get into the city were held up for a full a day by a handful of stubborn men, vastly outnumbered but determined not to yield while they could still fight. ‘When Malone and Grace in No. 25 Northumberland Road opened fire, the effect was devastating’ (Townshend, Easter 1916), and there were significant British casualties. As the years pass, archives of this nature and significance come to hand more and more rarely. Provenance: Mr. Sean Kearney (nephew of Seamus Grace) purchased from him and by descent to the present vendor.
With an unrecorded Joyce Item? Joyce (James). A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. L., Egoist [1917], First English Edition (from American sheets, with the Huebsch copyright imprint (1916) on rear of t.p. Orig. green cloth stamped in blind, spine cloth separating at lower hinge, but the hinge holding firmly. A little spotting to upper edge. S. & C. 12. Laid in is a leaflet (4pp, single folded sheet) with ‘Extracts from some Press Notices’, printed in Harlesden, dated 1916 and quoting more than 30 notices by reviewers including Ezra Pound, H.G. Wells, Ernest Boyd, The Freeman’s Journal, Irish Times, Irish Book Lover, and various English, Irish, American and Continental journals, one in Greek lettering. Fold marks, a little scuffed. We have not seen this leaflet before. Its authorship is not stated, but it is certainly possible that it was drafted or approved by Joyce and his associates. The publisher (Harriet Weaver) subscribed to a clipping service for Joyce (see S. & C. p. vii), which may explain the great range of reviews. These clippings are now in the Yale University Library. The leaflet is not recorded by S. & C. (1)
