“Spaj” Atkinson (act.1920 & ‘30s) – A lone tree beside a stream, watercolour enhanced with butterfly wings, mounted on black card, image dimensions 27 x 17cm, visible mount dimensions 34.5 x 25cm, signed ‘Spajs Butterfly Wings’ to the mount, sold with the Harrod’s exhibition leaflet which includes a verse by the artist and details of his butterfly specimens.Spaj Atkinson was a disabled London artist who gained an international reputation due to his novel art works using old and damaged butterfly wings which were of no use to science or collectors. He held an exhibition of his works at Harrod’s in 1933, where this example was bought, and his clients included Queen Mary and other members of the Royal Family, as well as Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin. Atkinson was deaf, lost the sight of one eye, and was paralysed in one leg due to an early motor-car accident. He began making his pictures while undertaking rehabilitation therapy.
