Lay Preachers in Dundalk 1865 Anon: Is Lay Preaching sanctioned by God? Permitted by the Church? Approved by the Fathers of the Reformation? NO!Dundalk: Printed by William Tempest. 1865. Rare.12mo, orig. printed paper covers, a little soiled, 21 pp. Written in the first person, in the style of a sermon. The author is not identified, but is clearly a Minister of the established Church of Ireland. He presents a well-structured and vehement argument against preaching and exposition of the word of God by persons who - though they may be well-meaning and enthusiastic - have not been trained and ordained to that end. He refers to a 'leaflet', issued by 'M.R.', and a 'Plea for Primitive Christianity and Christian Liberty', by 'A.H.' [1864, copy in British Library], which he says have been locally circulated [presumably by Methodists or Quakers], and warns against claims that all who have not been 'saved' are damned.Laid in is a later news cutting quoting the Archbishop of Canterbury's views on the missionary preaching of Messrs. Moody and Sankey [American religious revivalists, 1870s].Not found in COPAC or in NLI online catalogue. Possibly a unique surviving copy. (1)
