Tattoo ephemera, early 20th Century, collected by Robert Andrew Scott MacFie to include various contemporary flyers for tattoo artists, a leaflet on The Life of Madame Elia: The Wonderful and most Marvellous Tattooed Lady, manuscript notes; a manuscript letter by Sutherland MacDonald, Tattoo Artist in Jermyn Street, London, signed on letterhead paper, regarding the use of client images in a lecture to be given by MacFie (qty) Robert Andrew Scott MacFie was the financial sponsor and the catalyst that revitalised the development of the Gypsy Lore Society in 1907. MacFie was meticulous in the running of the GLS, storing all incoming correspondence in letterbooks, and keeping a copy of all his replies, using a Watt Copying Machine. He claimed that he had filled at least ten letterbooks, each of a thousand pages. He also catalogued a library of books, press clippings and other ephemera of which the current lot appears to be a part. Many of these documents are now in the University of Liverpool’s Special Collections and Archives.Beneath his meticulous attention to details and apparent conformity, MacFie also had a Bohemian streak, for he had the arms and motto of MacFie of Dreghorn tattooed on his chest, which he frequently displayed for the Gypsies in Bulgaria.MacFie spent time in the bohemian circle of both John Sampson and Augustus John, see: Augustus John and Liverpool’s Gypsy Lore Society

Well specified manual gearbox car in a stylish colour combination with just over 31,000 miles. At the Geneva Show in March 1999, as a replacement for their much-admired F355, Ferrari introduced the 360 Modena to critical acclaim and not unsurprisingly, within weeks there was a two year waiting list. The 355 was a tough act to follow, but the 360 was rather special - its all-aluminium construction (a first for Ferrari) was revolutionary, resulting in a much lighter car along with increased rigidity (40% lighter than the 355's steel platform but also nearly 30% stiffer), whilst also improving the under-body aerodynamics using knowledge gained from Ferrari's F1 programme. All this combined with the flowing Pininfarina lines, computer-controlled suspension, a staggering 400bhp, 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and 186mph - immediately made its predecessor, the excellent 355, feel rather dated. The Modena also saw a new word introduced into Ferrari reviews - 'reliability'. The engineering had been more thoroughly thought through and this was (and still is) reflected in lower servicing costs than for earlier mid-engined examples of the 'Prancing Horse'. Higher levels of quality too meant that the 360 became one of the first truly modern Ferraris that could realistically be used every day. That didn't detract from the excitement factor however, with strong performance, a searing engine note and a very capable chassis.Supplied by Maranello Concessionaires Ltd, this right-hand drive 360 Modena is fitted with the desirable manual gearbox and looks particularly special in Argento Nürburgring with a rare Bordeaux and black leather interior. It's still fitted with the OE equipment Becker Ferrari radio with the original instruction leaflet. Well specified from new with factory Wing Shields, a 'Challenge' rear grille and full electric seats, it was later treated to a Nouvalari sports silencer which just takes the exhaust note under load to a different level. The indicated mileage of 31,484 is supported by a full service record detailing a major service conducted just over 1,000 miles ago which included cam belts, air-conditioning belt and water pump. The service book contains 14 service stamps at the correct mileages, with either main dealers or specialists and the MOT is valid until August 2025. The car is supplied with all its original manuals, a full Ferrari toolkit, interior dust cover, Ferrari soft briefcase, Ferrari documents case with torch, four keys and two fobs including the original red item. Being finished in a colour combination away from the obligatory makes this lovely Ferrari in 6-speed manual form a very interesting proposition, as earlier Modena examples are now catching the eye and beginning to come of age.Specification Make: FERRARI Model: 360 MODENA Year: 2001 Chassis Number: ZFFYR51C000122444 Registration Number: X866 MGJ Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 59966 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 31484 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Black/Bordeaux LeatherClick here for more details and images
One of the defining hot hatches of the 1990s, this remarkably original, first generation Clio Williams has covered just 9,331 miles from new. It’s the early 1990s and the 1.8-litre Clio 16v is locked in combat for hot hatch glory with the ageing Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9. It’s a better car by many objective criteria, but not a convincingly faster one and in the eyes of many, the GTi still holds the crown. It took a truly special car to convincingly wrestle supremacy away from Peugeot, to really bury the old-timer and to refine the class in the process. That car was the Clio Williams.Sold with the compelling marketing strategy of an F1 team association, the Williams was actually an 'homologation special' in the familiar mould. It was built because RenaultSport wanted to go rallying and the class maximum displacement stood at 2-litres. Given this was still the era of homologation into 'Classes' A and 'N', Renault simply had to build 2,500 road cars to qualify, although it would eventually build many more. The initial production run of the Clio Williams was limited to just 5,400 examples, of which only 390 arrived in the UK.The suspension used a reinforced front subframe borrowed from the Clio Cup racer plus uprated springs, dampers, rear torsion arms and thicker anti-roll bars. The track was increased by 34mm and the 7J Speedline alloys were 0.5" wider than the 16v’s and distinctively gold. The gearbox was stronger too, with revised ratios. There was just one exterior colour offered for the first generation of Williams – '449' Metallic Sports Blue – and the cumulative effect of body (already blistered of arch, front, and rear and bulging of bonnet from the 16v), paint and those golden wheels was as close to hot hatch perfection as many felt it was possible to get.Codenamed 'F7R' and developed from the 16v’s 137bhp F7P unit, the new engine featured a longer stroke and bigger bore size and benefitted from a stronger crankshaft plus new pistons, camshafts and conrods with bigger valves and a lightweight exhaust manifold. Output was now 148bhp at 6,100rpm and 126lb/ft at 4,500rpm, not enormous by today's standards but 85% of the torque was available from 2,500rpm and the car only weighed 981kg. The factory specification included central locking, electric windows, and blue-faced instrument dials with three co-ordinating blue auxiliary read-outs atop the centre console displaying the oil level, temperature and pressure – all very purposeful.#0181 is one of the finest Clio Williams to come to the market for a very long time with just 9,331 miles from new and with the original owner for nearly 25 years. Ordered new by him from Arlington Renault of Yeovil in August 1993, it arrived from the factory and was registered in February 1994. Testament to his caring ownership, the Clio is accompanied by the most comprehensive of history files which includes the original sales receipt, a promotional leaflet with a handwritten deposit receipt on it, tax discs and three MOTs over its limited use between dry storage. The inventory includes all driver manuals, two sets of keys and the obligatory Gemini Alarm fobs required in the day to get it insured. The owner also purchased two Williams Renault promotional jackets (M), an F1 RenaultSport World Championship cap and key fob.New tyres were fitted prior to the last MOT test, however the original equipment factory tyres are available should the new owner feel that's important. #0181 still presents as showroom fresh and must be the most original example of the ultimate performance hatchback, a rare opportunity.Specification Make: RENAULT Model: WILLIAMS CLIO Year: 1994 Chassis Number: VF1C57M0510863307 Registration Number: L471 NYD Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 00C5139 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 9331 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlueClick here for more details and images
