Lot 545

A Chad Valley 1930s jointed Golly, made of velvet with mohair wig and painted smile --13½in. (34.5cm.) high (missing jacket); a Dean's Rag Book Hetty the Help Yourself doll with Government Evacuation Scheme tag; a printed Dean's doll; a Planes of the RAF sticky-back brass recognition stickers with leaflet; a Lakehurst Dirigible dexterity game; and other 2nd WW items in suitcase. These items are listed on the basis they are illustrative of by a gone culture in which there were different social norms. We understand the potential controversy surrounding this type of item but believe that providing transparent information about historical context fosters greater understanding of our complex cultural history. Originally handmade by mothers in Africa for their children from old fabric and cloth, the golly doll was adopted as the mascot and trademark for the Robertson's confectionery brand around 1910 after the company's founder John Robertson visited the US and noticed children playing with them. Robertson's Gollies have been collected by people across the UK and around the world for generations but garnered a contentious image in the 1980s because of links to racism. The trademark was removed from Robertson's branding in 2001.

Fearn, DFC, RAF who served with 617 (Dambuster) Squadron Distinguished Flying Cross, GVIR, reverse officially dated '1944' 1939-1945 Star Air Crew Europe Star with France and Germany clasp War Medal, extremely fine and court mounted as worn, presented in a glass display case with cloth brevet and riband bar (frame size 40 x 32cm), with two logbooks and copy of Aircrew, The Story of the Men who Flew the Bombers by Bruce Lewis, in which Fearn is mentioned several timesQty: (4)Footnote: Provenance: Bosley's, Marlow 2010 (lot 482) DFC London Gazette 21 April 1944 The recommendation for the DFC (19 January 1944) states, 'P/O Fearn was posted to No.57 Squadron from 1662 CON. Unit on the 28th June 1943. He has taken a part in attacks against many strongly defended targets in Germany, including 8 of the recent attacks on Berlin. P/O Fearn has shown courage and resolution throughout his tour. His example has been responsible for the excellent offensive spirit in his crew. P/O Fearn is strongly recommended for the award of DFC.' Flight Lieutenant Arthur Willam Fearn joined the RAF in October 1941 and trained in Tiger Moths with 2 EFTS, he then trained in America in Vultee BT 13 before returning to England with No 6 AFU and then posted to 27 OTU, on 15 May 1943 he flew in a Wellington to Paris on a leaflet raid. On 1 July 1943 he was posted to Scampton with No.57 Squadron (Lancasters), his first operation with the squadron was on 3 July 1943 to Cologne with further operations in the prevailing months. On 4 October 1943 during an operation to Frankfurt his aircraft encountered a Ju88 over the channel and his aircraft was holed by flak. In November 1943, he flew four operations in 8 days taking part in the Battle of Berlin with a total of 8 operations over Berlin between November 1943 and January 1944. In total, he flew 21 operations with 57 Squadron before being posted to 617 (Dambuster) Squadron in February 1944. His first trip on a Special Operation to the Aero Works in Lyons was on 23 March 1944 with two further operations to Lyons a few days later. On 5 April another special operation on an aircraft factory in Toulouse, with other operations over Villacoubley (near Paris), Brunswick and Munich (a photograph of these two-night attacks are pasted in the logbook). In May the squadron were preparing for the D-Day landings and on 5/6 June special operation with cooperation with Sea-Borne Forces which was to fly a decoy mission, the squadron flew a low-level box pattern, depositing window, this affecting the German radar, the operators believing the invasion fleet was heading for Le Harve and not Normandy. On 8 June the Saunur Railway Tunnel was bombed as the allied commander believed the Germans would use the tunnel to move a Panzer unit to the Normandy battlefield. The tunnel was successfully bombed and the attack is regarded as a notable contribution to the success of the Normandy invasion. The operation marked the end of Fearns tour and is signed by Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire VC. It was Cheshire's common practice to ask crews if they wanted to go on with operations or be posted, Fearn decided to continue his operations on 14 June 1944 over Le Harve destroying U Boats and E Boat Pens with the new Tallboy bombs, a similar operation the following day over Boulogne, on 20 July a special operation in the Pas de Calais area Fearn records 'target obscured by the cloud, ordered to bring 'bombs' back, landed with some 60,000 lbs. Saw first Buzz-bomb crossing area, over coast, then destroyed by Ack Ack fire', on 25 July his aircraft was hit by flak over target, the bomb release cable was severed and they were unable to aim bombs and therefore released them manually. Fearn flew 45 operations with 24 of them with 617 Squadron, his last operation with the squadron was on 18 August 1944, he was then posted as a flying instructor and then to the Coastal Command Development unit before returning to an operational squadron (15 Squadron) in June 1945 the unit was primarily ex 617 personnel and a record of this is in the logbook, the final entry is on 29 January 1946 and Fearn flew a total of 1124 hours 51 minutes.

Lot 484

Cain of London. A large photographic archive of gay and leather fetishism photographs by Cain of London [Anthony Clifford Burls], late 1960s/1970s, mostly vintage photographs of posing male models, many with leather fetishism interest, some on motorbikes but largely indoor studio shots, model names identified including Guy, Eric, Dave James, Scott Richardson, a total of 51 vintage gelatin silver prints with Cain stamps or credit labels to versos, 20 x 25cm, plus a further 24 similar with Anthony C. Burls stamps to versos, and a further 42 without credit stamps including 4 of Wolfgang von Jürgen (plus signed publicity leaflet for Tony and 3 typed letters signed to Burls including one aspiring to be a model, dated 27 July 1970), together with a large group of over 300 x 35mm contact print images, many on 30 sheets of eight contacts but including some sheets partly cut up, plus related photographs by 'Cain' including a series of 30 photographs of fairgrounds and male fairground workers, many with shirts stripped off, plus a further 30 photographs of amateur football teams and footballers, (including a small number of negatives), plus an assorted group of approximately 200 photographs including young male models, head shots, car rallying and assorted subjects, mostly postcard sizes and smaller but including a small number of large format photographs, plus a small quantity of printed ephemera including 4 small Cain of London catalogues, photograph price lists (with UK and US prices), plus an original certificate of registration of business name for Burls to be Cain of London, dated 2 May 1968, and another for the business name Cain of London dated 6 August 1969Qty: (an archive )Footnote: An extraordinary photographic archive of gay and leather fetishism history, obtained by the owner from the estate of the photographer. The Sexual Offences Act was passed in 1967, decriminalising private homosexual acts between men aged over 21, while at the same time imposing heavier penalties on street offences. So while these photographs were taken in this more liberal new era the risks and challenges would still have been great. Some of the male models for 'Tom' Cain's photographs were gay but many were straight and not having the right leather gear of their own had to borrow from Cain's limited wardrobe. Due to the risqué content finding publishers for catalogues was near-impossible and Cain and friends had to make these improvised home-made photocopied catalogues. One stapled 4-page photographs price list has printed, (with remarkable social historical foresight), the words 'First Edition' on the upper wrapper.

Lot 526

Only 4,600 miles from new, impeccable service history, recent health check and immaculate throughout.Presenting superbly in Carrara (marble) White with a black interior and lightweight bucket seatsProducing some 370bhp from its 3.8-litre flat sixShort-shift, 6-speed manual gearbox, mechanical LSD, Porsche Torque Vectoring systemJust 4,600 miles only from new and two previous keepersOriginally supplied by Porsche Centre Aberdeen who took care of the first service in December 2017 at 1,412 milesSecond service by Porsche Centre Solihull in August of this year at 4,553 miles (£1,399). At the same time the car had a full health check and passed with flying coloursSupplied with a complete book pack and stamped service bookThe Boxster Spyder is the most extreme version of Porsche’s 981 Boxster, lighter by 30kg, longer by ten millimetres and lower by 11mm when compared with a Boxster GTS. The front end is more aggressive in its design and there are distinctive streamlined humps behind the roll-over hoops (a tribute to the 718 Spyder of the 1960s). Suspension is the 20mm lower, passive Sports set-up that is also a no-cost option on the Boxster GTS. There is a Sport Chrono package as standard, the most notable benefit of which is the provision of dynamic transmission mounts. On the rear axle is a mechanical LSD (22 per cent locking under power and 27 per cent on the overrun), which is part of the Porsche Torque Vectoring system. The Spyder’s 3.8-litre engine is a mildly detuned version of the one found in the Cayman GT4 and the 991 Carrera S. Power is 45bhp up on a Boxster GTS and torque is up a healthy 37lb ft, taking the total to 310lb ft. The steering rack is slightly quicker (taken from the 911 Turbo) and the steering wheel is 360mm in diameter, like the GT4 and GT3 RS. Finally, the look is not forgotten with the addition of a very elegant but sporty one-piece double-dented rear hood. This jaw-dropping example has covered a mere 4,600 miles from new and has had just two former keepers with our vendor having the car since July last year and only looking to move it on due to problems with personal mobility. Originally supplied by Porsche Centre Aberdeen who took care of the first service in December 2017 at 1,412 miles with the next service being completed by Porsche Centre Solihull in August of this year at 4,553 miles all receipted for £1,399 At the same time the car had a full health check and passed with flying colours.Finished in Carrara (not Carrera) White with a Black interior, this fabulous 981 Spyder comes with a full Porsche presentation pack including Service Book, Owners Handbook, Communication Management Book and a Radio Equipment reference leaflet. Being the later Spyder, it has the improved convertible top which takes but a very short while to drop down as opposed to the original jigsaw puzzle of the earlier cars. With the 981 benefitting from the 911's 6-cylinder powerplant, performance is on a whole different level making it a true drivers' car capable of speeds up to 180 mph. This may be one of the best examples available on offer currently and with just 4,600 miles from new, very collectable.
