Lot 186

An early 20th century Jambiya dagger, likely Moroccan in origin. Comprising of a shaped wooden handle, with chased brass pommel following the outline of the handle. Curved single edge steel blade, with no apparent marks. Interestingly, the scabbard is made in two halves, from different metals. The ‘presentation’ side is much more finely chased with decorative scrolls and foliage, and this would seem to be a low grade sheet silver. To reverse side, worn against the clothing, is less profusely decorated and made in a brass metal. As is usual, there are 2 suspension rings attached to the scabbard. The dagger is together with a carved sandalwood cigarette box, likely Indian in origin, and dating from the 1930’s / WW2 era. The dagger measures approximately 37cm in length, with the blade length being 20.5cm. The box measures 15cm x 9.7cm x 3.5cm. Condition: some age related wear to the dagger. The wooden handle has some small old small fractures from shrinkage, and 3 tiny holes near the pommel (possibly old woodworm?). Some denting to the metal on the pommel, and some normal contact marks to the sheet silver on the scabbard. The blade shows evidence of sharpening, and has scratching and some darkening to the steel in places. The box is in good condition.
