A WW2 era German Kriegsmarine officer’s dress dagger, complete with knot and hanging straps, and it’s blue webbing under belt.A fine example of its type, but seemingly a non maker marked piece.Of standard design, with a creamy white celluloid grip with twisted wire binding, eagle and swastika pommel, and the usual cross guard with push button release catch.Steel double edged blade, with narrow double fuller to both sides. The gilt brass scabbard has two suspension rings, both attached to oak leaf mounts, and the usual lighting bolt motifs towards the chape area. The hanging straps are of black velvet, with gilt aluminium lions head fittings. All of the lobster style clips are present, but the small addition chain that would be attached to one of the clips is absent.Provenance: acquired by Lieutenant, later Captain D.B.Lynes of the 2nd S.A.S. Lt Lynes was believed to have collected the piece at the conclusion of WW2 from a German U-Boat ‘Sub Pen’ base in Bergen, along with several other Kriegsmarine related pieces (offered as separate lots in the sale).Approximately 41.8cm total length, blade length 25.2cm.Condition: generally very good. The celluloid handle is intact and without cracking, just a tiny surface scuff to one side. Some age related dulling and wear to the gilt finish on the pommel and cross guard. The blade is clean, with just some minor mottling to the tip area. The scabbard has its bright gilt finish, and there are some minor depressions to the metal (often seen on this type of dagger). The gilt fittings to the straps have worn in places, revealing the silvery coloured aluminium beneath, but are nevertheless intact. The knot attached at the handle shows some minor wear from service.
