Europe, possibly Spain, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A beautiful example of a plug bayonet, an early bayonet type especially used in Spain. The steel blade is gorgeous, with openwork in several places, inset brass details and fine incised decorative elements on the face of the blade. A brass and polished wood handle give it a dagger-like appearance when not attached to a rifle. Size of bayonet: 2.5" W x 14.5" H (6.4 cm x 36.8 cm); size on stand: 4" W x 15.5" H (10.2 cm x 39.4 cm)The sheath of this example is brass tipped at both ends and has green fabric over newsprint forming the majority of its body. We believe plug bayonets originated as a hunting weapon, so that if a shot was inaccurate, the animal could be fended off using this. They were designed to slide directly into the musket barrel and were used in battles to convert light infantry to heavy infantry and to hold off cavalry charges. Provenance: Ex-Private Colorado Springs, CO collection Condition: Wear and small area of loss to cloth on sheath; some tarnish and patina on blade and handle. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Ancient Near East, Luristan, ca. 1000 BCE. A fantastic find! A short bronze dagger with a short, straight blade ending in an abruptly tapered tip. A thin handle made of silver has an upturned pommel in the form of two horse's hooves. Comes with custom stand. Size: 8.25" L x 0.8" W (21 cm x 2 cm)The region of Luristan, which encompasses the rugged Zagros Mountain chain, is famous for its metal craftsmanship that was above and beyond the skill level of contemporary groups. The affluent group in Luristan society that patronized the metalworking industry and purchased fine items like this sword were nomadic horsemen. They would travel into towns and purchase swords and other bronze and iron objects from craftsmen there. Although these horsemen were pre-literate, we know from the records of the Elamites and other southern neighbors that these tribesmen functioned as mercenaries in the constant warfare between the Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Elamites. When they died, they were buried in rock-covered tombs with weapons like this one. Provenance: Ex-Hagar Collection Condition: Tip of dagger has been recently restored. Patina over surface and tarnish to handle but shape and form are excellent. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #119277
