Circa 1800-600 BCA slender, cast-bronze dagger with a pointed blade and a cuboid handle which slightly flairs outwards at its base. Circa 1800-600 BCA finely modelled cast bronze dagger, comprising a long, pointed blade with ribbed grip and flanged, hollowed hilt. In flanged hilt swords and daggers, such as this fine example, the hilt and blade have been cast together in a single piece, with raised flanges to the hilt’s edges, hollowed to hold wood or bone inlay. Size: L:364mm / W:46mm; 275g Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK / International art markets.

Circa 500-400 BCA finely decorated Iron Acinaces-type sword with pointed, elongated triangular blade, B-shaped guard, rectangular handle and openwork winged pommel. The acinaces is a type of dagger or short sword used mainly in the first millennium BC in the eastern Mediterranean, especially by the Medes, Scythians and Persians, before it was adopted by the Greeks. The Scythians were a warlike nomadic people who dominated the Pontic Steppe (the area North of the Black Sea and stretching as far as Central Asia) in the 7th-3rd centuries BC. This example is from Siberia, where the people were known as Scythians or Scytho-Siberians who left behind an imaginable number of tombs full of precious metalworks. Although horse warfare is what the Scythians are famous for, their weapons and saddles, lacking hard stirrups, seem better suited to dismounting and melee fighting; the acinaces would have been a primary weapon in that kind of situation. Size: L:527mm / W:90mm; 630g Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK / International art markets.
Circa 100 BCCast iron, the handle formed of two sections, held together by joints inserted into discs at the centre and pommel, the blade of tapering form with median midrib, the scabbard of "frame-type" with one open side and the other decorated with double-spiral motifs and openwork panels. A remarkable survival, this shortarm dagger is of Iberian construction, but the shape later became more famous as the Roman pugio, the standard issue legionnaires sidearm. It was when campaigning against the Celtiberians in the first century BC that the Roman form first came into widespread use, suggesting the Roman army appreciated the strengths of the native weapon. Interestingly the decorative square and teardrop shaped cavities on the sheath of the present example have been patched with metal in ancient times. Perhaps to better guard the iron blade from the effects of wet weather. Size: Set of 2: L:210 - 307mm / W:53 - 54mm; 255g Provenance: Private UK collection; formerly with Axel Guttman, Germany.
