A WORCESTER TURQUOISE-GROUND LONDON DECORATED SPARROW-BEAK JUG AND COVER, PROBABLY THE ATELIER OF JAMES GILES, HARLEQUIN SERVICE CIRCA 1770 Painted with two gilt-lined panels of exotic birds and a fiddler in a landscape, Meissen style crossed swords mark and paper collection labels 14cm highProvenance: The Earls of Lonsdale and thence the Leonard Fuller CollectionThe 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), also known as 'The Yellow Earl' for his love of that colour, inherited enormous wealth in part from his late father's coalmines in Cumbria. He was a great sportsman, master of both the Quorn and the Cottesmore in his time, as well as having associations with racing and boxing. His extravagance and the closure of the mines in the 20th century meant he had to sell many an estate and upon his death in 1944, his brother the 6th Earl was forced to sell Lowther Castle, the Lonsdale seat in Cumbria. In 1947, the contents were put up for auction in what was to be the largest house sale of the 20th century. Though pure speculation, it is possible that this Giles decorated jug was purchased at that sale by the Fullers. For a closely related example see Christie's, New York, Property From the Collection of Mrs. J. Insley Blair (1618), 21 January 2006, Lot 603, ($132,000 incl. BP). This teapot became the fourth item of this type to become known. Condition Report: Some minute chips to the gilt flower finial. Slight wear to gilt line rim of jug. Areas of fritting to the cover. Small tear to paste where the rim joins the body 3mm long. Please see additional images available from the Dept. upon request.Condition Report Disclaimer
