Francis Towne (British 1739-1816) Lake Windermere, Lake District Watercolour, pen and ink Inscribed 83 BP verso (in the hand of Paul Oppé) 26.5 x 38cm (10¼ x 15 in.) Provenance: J.H. Merivale, thence by descent to his great great grandson Eustace Squire Gallery, London, 1939 Austin Wakeford Spink, London The Manning Galleries, London, May 1977, where purchased by John Byng Kenrick, £3500 Sale, Christie's, London, British Art on Paper, 5 June 2003, Lot 81 Acquired from the above by The Lord Wraxall Exhibited: Exeter, Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, Festival of Britain Loan Exhibition Three Exeter Artists, 1951, no. 45 Francis Towne (1739-1816) was a British watercolour painter known for his landscapes in Italy and the Lake District. In 1915, art historian Paul Oppé (1878-1957) catalogued a previously unknown collection of watercolours by Francis Towne which were inherited by Maria Sophia Merivale (1853-1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860-1945). These works, including the present lot, went on to form the basis of a subsequent catalogue raisonné of the artist. Originally misidentified as a view of Lake Lugano by Oppé, the art historian subsequently annotated his list, Probably Lakes 1786. Since 2003, it is now generally accepted that the present lot is a view of Lake Windermere, with the range of mountains to the left of the composition now being identified as the silhouette of the Langdale Pikes. Very few of Towne’s later drawings survive aside from the Lake District series of 1787, most of which were executed on Roman paper, bought back to England by Towne after his return from Italy in 1781. The present lot is also drawn on Roman paper. Other Lake District views on paper of similar dimensions include A View at Ambleside, dated August 1786 (Christie’s, London, 14 November 1972, Lot 93) and a watercolour of Ullswater (Sotheby’s, London 19 March 1981, Lot 105).
