Josie McCoy Wangari Maathai Coloured Pencil on Paper Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About I paint portraits of characters from the world of film, television and music. I've been committed to this theme since I started painting 23 years ago and, while my way of painting has developed over the years and the subjects have changed with time, I'm still compelled to paint recognisable women from contemporary culture. I am interested in what a viewer brings with them when looking at a drawing or painting of someone they recognise, in terms of their personal memories and references, and how connected we can feel with a familiar face. I'm from Plymouth in the UK and I now live in Valencia, Spain. Education BA Fine Art at Solihull College, West Midlands in 1997 and MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 1999. Select Exhibitions/Awards I've had solo exhibitions in London, Valencia, Newcastle, Milan and Santiago de Compostela and have exhibited in group shows in Europe, South America and the U.S. My work has been selected for the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery four times and I was shortlisted for the Castellon International Painting Prize. I received a Woo Charitable Foundation Arts Bursary and won the Centre of Attention Painting Prize. My paintings are included in private and public collections including the BBC, Standard Chartered Bank, Collection of University of Wales, Jeremy Mogford Collection, Borchard Collection of British Self-Portraits in the 20th Century and the Ofelia Martín & Javier Núñez Collection. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork Although I usually paint familiar faces from film and television, the drawings I've done for the Art on a Postcard IWD Auction depict two incredible environmental activists, Greta Thunberg and Wangari Maathai, as they are the inspiration for my next two oil paintings. The drawings are both coloured pencil on watercolour paper.
