A GEORGE II IRISH SILVER OR CENTRE TABLE CIRCA 1730 73cm high, 84cm wide, 55cm deep For two closely related tables with foliate and lozenge carved friezes, see Christie's London, Important English Furniture (6601), 4th July 2002, Lot 70 (£105,650 incl. BP) and Christie's New York, British Interior (9056), 21st January 1999, Lot 326 ($63,000 incl. BP). Please note, the top is mahogany but the base (including the legs and friezes) are probably of fruitwood or beech  Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. There are some losses and restorations: some dark staining worn over the years; the table top has a slightly indented join; later fixing marks to some corners of the top; some leaf tip chips and some possibly replaced as dark stained; later blocks to the underside. There is evidence of old worm; the table is solid and of reassuring weight. The table has unusual carving displaying detailed fluency and design to all four sides. Please see all the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition. The flecking in the timber of the top gives the timber the appearance of possibly being closer to what has been called 'red walnut' . The dark patina to the frieze and legs makes it more difficult to distinguish for certain but the inclusion of pale coloured flecking would lead to the conclusion that the legs and frieze are made from a fruitwood or beech. Although one might suggest beech, the natural build up of patina and a reddish colour (alongside less consistent flecking) would possibly more strongly suggest a fruitwood.  Condition Report Disclaimer

It was used as a pattern book, throughout the late 17th Century and early 18th Century while there was continuing interest in Chinese and Japanese lacquered furniture. For a related chest on stand, see Christie's London, The David Style Collection (5748), 13th January 2005, Lot 398 (£8,400 incl. BP). A GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND BRASS MOUNTED WINE COOLER AFTER A DESIGN BY ROBERT ADAM, CIRCA 1780 With a removable brass liner 51cm high, 86cm wide, 54cm deep The form of this wine cooler closely relates to a number of other wine coolers designed by Robert Adam for notable commissions such as Osterley Park, Middlesex; Cumberland House, Pall Mall and Kenwood, Middlesex. For the respective illustrated examples, see Masterpieces of English Furniture, The Gerstenfeld Collection, Christie's Books, 1998, p.122-123 and Ralph Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, Vol III, 1954, p. 373. Such as the aforementioned comparables, it is probable that the present lot also originally formed part of a suite of dining furniture comprising a serving table, flanked by pedestals and urns. For another related wine cooler also after a design by Robert Adam and attributed to Sefferin Nelson, see Christie's London, The Exceptional Sale - Property of the 7th Earl of Harewood's Will Trust (17042), 4th July 2019, Lot 105 (£287,250 incl. BP). Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. There are some losses and restorations: the brass liner is a later replacement; the base with three later metal braces; small replacement veneers and mouldings; there are tack holes around the top of the interior suggesting that there was an original, possibly lead, lining; the curved sides of coopered form with some cracks; it is probable that the brass bands are later replacements, though the rectangular brass blocks holding them in place appear to be original (one is loose); the base slightly bowed; the interior with marks and stains of use and age; the interior with some later staining. The cooler is separate to the stand. An impressive wine cooler in scale and design. Please see all the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition - they are a vital part of this report.Condition Report Disclaimer

A WILLIAM & MARY OLIVEWOOD OYSTER VENEERED AND HOLLY CROSSBANDED CHEST OF DRAWERS CIRCA 1690 78cm high, 96cm wide, 57cm deepThe present lot displays unusual and striking features including the marquetry top and lozenge marquetry sides. For a related William & Mary oyster veneered chest see Sotheby's, New York, Classic Design, 16th April 2024, Lot 16, ($17,780 incl. BP). Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. There are some losses and restorations including some veneers, border mouldings, patches, some filler and overpainted small old repairs, splits to oak drawer linings, some later blocks to the underside and some dark staining. There is a subtle bow/dip to the top. The feet are later, one loose. There is some evidence of old worm. The handles and locks are later, there is no key and the locks are open. There is a gilt metal inventory label 'LK 5783', applied to one of the short drawers, the provenance of which is unknown. These metal inventory labels starting 'LK' but with differing numbers can be found on numerous items sold at auction from the early 2000s. The range of furniture bearing these labels varies from 17th century English oak through to 19th century continental furniture, some with inventory numbers over 'LK8000', suggesting that if this relates to a property, it was of substantial size. 'LK' could relate to the name of a property or the name of an owner. An alternative thought could be that this 'LK' label marked furniture was applied to pieces passing through the 20th century antique furniture retailer and restorer Louis Koch, though this seems a less likely explanation as labels applied by furniture dealers/retailers state their name (rather than initials) and address, and don't attribute inventory numbers to pieces they sell. In any event this piece shares unknown provenance with other pieces recorded at auction including: An 18th century rococo table, Woolley & Wallis, 4th October 2023, lot 625, sold for £1400; and a George II console table, Sotheby's, London, 12th November 2019, lot 173, sold for £25,000.Overall rich colour, lively figuring and unusual appealing marquetry design. Please see all the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
