HICKMAN, Charles, Bp. A sermon preached before the Queen at White-hall on Sunday the 26th of October - London: 1690. 4to. pp. [i], 24, 2 (List of books printed). A fine copy in modern quarter morocco. Wing H 1900. The text was Psalms, chapter IV, verse 4. His closing remarks represented a defiant statement of the Anglican position, attacked on two front by the Catholics and the dissenters: "To conclude all in one word; The Church is the nearest way to Heaven; but our Chamber is the only way to Church." Sweeney 2319. The extensive lists of people in categories which indicate degrees of guilt make this an especially valuable guide to the Protestant interest in Ireland at the time of the "Glorious Revolution" containing not merely the aristocracy and gentry but also merchants, artisans and such like. Sweeney 2520 with summaries of the Acts in this volume carried in supplementary entries A324 to A331. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
ITALY & FRANCE, Universities of. / FOX, Edward, Bp and GARDINER, Stephen Bp / [CRANMER? Thomas]. The determinations of the moste famous Universities of Italy and Fraunce - London: 1531. 8vo. pp. 309. A fine copy in nineteenth century morocco. Elaborately tooled in gilt on edges and spine. All edges gilt. STC 14287. With the Pope continuing to resist all the pleas of Henry VIII for an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Cranmer is credited with the suggestion that the theological schools of the great European universities should be canvassed for support for the thesis that it was unlawful for a man to marry his brother's wife. This thus became a very early instance of an exercise in public relations. The number of missing universities show that contrary opinions were not included, but enough supporters were found to salve the King's "tender" conscience. The original Latin version was intended to influence European opinion. This translation aimed at the home market is unsigned, but it is such a remarkable piece of "modern" English that the attribution to Thomas Cranmer must stand. With the subsequent divorce, Henry took an irreversible step towards the break with Rome; this in turn injected the religious factor into the continuing struggle between England and Ireland making this a work of seminal importance in the history of the relationship between the two islands. Sweeney 5297. Provenance: The Britwell Court Library copy which was sold by Sothebys on May 5th 1920, lot 150 to John Burns, who inscribed and dated his acquisition. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
JONES, Henry, Bp. A sermon at the funeral of James Margetson, D.D. Late Arch-Bishop of Armagh .... Preached at Christ Church Dublin, August 30. 1678 - London: 1679. 4to. pp. 48. A very good copy in modern quarter morocco. Wing J 947. The text was 1 Corinthians chapter XV, verses 24-28. A Latin funeral oration that had been delivered "in the name of the University of Dublin, at the herse of him their vice-chancellor" was included in this pamphlet. Sweeney 2618. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
