Triassic Period, 250-200 million years BP. A complete fossil Keichousaurus hui from Xingyi, Guizhou, China on matrix. 717 grams, 27.5cm (10 3/4"). From an old Bristol paleontological collection; acquired 1950s-1960s. Keichousaurus was a late-Triassic marine reptile, and a member of the Pleurosaur family, which went extinct 250 million years ago during the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event. They were specialised fish eaters, and were highly unusual amongst marine reptiles in that they gave birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Fine condition.
Lower Cretaceous Period, 120 million years BP. A complete Sinohydrosaurus lingyuanensis (also known as Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis) from the Yixian Formation, Lingyuan, Liaoning Province in Northeast China, in a display case. 63 grams, 12cm (4 3/4"). From a Lincoln paleontological collection. Sinohydrosaurus lingyuanensis is a more recently discovered and described (Li Jianjun, 1999, Beijing Natural History Museum) marine lizard from the famous dinosaur fossil beds of Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China. Believed to have descended from a land-dwelling ancestor, Sinohydrosaurus was a freshwater aquatic reptile. Fine condition.
Cretaceous Period, 145-65 million years BP. A large pair of Charonosaurus sp. hadrosaur eggs on matrix retaining evidence of the original leathery surface. 2.5 kg, 27cm (10 1/2"). Property of a North London gentleman; acquired on the UK art market before 2000. The hadrosaurs are known as the duck-billed dinosaurs, due to the similarity of their heads to those of modern ducks. In addition to the duck bill, Charonosaurus also had a large head crest. Dinosaur eggs are known from about 200 sites around the world, the majority in Asia and mostly in terrestrial (non-marine) rocks of Cretaceous Age. It may be that thick calcite eggshells evolved during the Cretaceous (145 to 66 million years ago"). Fine condition.
