He was reported suffering from shell shock on the 15th October 1916 at which time he was 29 years old and had served for 1 year 10 months, five months with the field force. A second report on the 22nd October records wounds and an entitlement to a wound stripe. With accompanying miniatures, both mounted as worn. Alton. Captain Custon's Military Cross was gazetted on the 14th November 1916 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He commanded the battalion front line during the attack, and pushed on under very heavy machine gun fire to support the leading battalion, which had suffered severely. When he came up, he found parts of three battalions, which he immediately reorganised'. The reverse 'To the Glorious Memory of those who fell....' A frosted silver agricultural medal, the obverse with a female figure holding a cornucopia surrounded by animals and farm machinery 'Inst Manchester 1767', the reverse 'Society for the improvement of Agriculture, Presented to Mr J. No. Chorlton for a Dairy Cow, 1830', 5cm diameter. A similar white metal award from the Waterford Farming Society dated 1865.
