He came from a wealthy family, his father, Mai Trung Cat was governor of Bac Ninh and was granted the title of Baron by the French government. He studied at the French High School in Hanoi. In 1925, Mai Thu joined the first class of the Indochina School of Fine Arts, under the direction of Victor Tardieu. It is during his years of studies that he became interested in painting illustrating scenes of Vietnamese rural life. He chose to paint them on silk, an expensive material that is as delicate as the palette of colors he used. The same year he went to Paris, where he depicted the Eiffel Tower. Later on he settled in Saigon where he became the Director of The Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Saigon (Saigon's Fine Arts College). 2. Overall (F-incorrect BP); with W2237 Rebuilt West Country class 4-6-2 loco & tender 'Lyme Regis' one complete side of loco is very seriously faded, a few marks, will benefit by cleaning (P)
