After sitting in the House of Commons for County Sligo between 1831 and 1841, he was briefly Junior Lord of the Treasury in 1841, before taking on the role of Usher of the Black Rod for the House of Lords from 1841 until his death in 1858. He married Jane Anne (1791-1847), the daughter of Col. Henry Peisley L’Estrange of Moystown (1760-1824), Cloghan, King's County, and it was to her that he gave the present lot as a gift.
