Ca. 300 - 200 BC. An Etruscan funerary urn lid from Volterra depicts a reclining naked man adorned with a flower necklace sculpted in alabaster. The figure is positioned atop the lid with his right arm resting on a cushion while his left arm is bent at the elbow. The body is carefully modelled, reflecting an understanding of anatomical proportions. The flower necklace is composed of delicately sculpted blossoms encircling the neck. The drapery beneath the figure cascades over the urn’s edges, creating a sense of depth and contrast with the smooth surface of the body.
