A bloodstone and cornelian desk seal, c.1860, length 60mm, the faceted bloodstone handle of tapering form with a faceted domed top, gold mounted with bands to a gadrooned base. The rectangular cushion shaped cornelian tablet seal engraved with the 1864 coat of arms of William John Frederick Vane (1792-1864), 4th Duke of Cleveland, and his wife, Grace, daughter of of the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. William John succeeded his elder brother, Henry, to the dukedom on 18 January 1864 and resumed the family name of Vane (vice Powlett) on 4 March 1864. He died childless on 6 September 1864 when he was succeeded by his next and last remaining brother, Harry, to the dukedom. The family seat was Battle Abbey, Sussex.
