Lock incorporated trellis/pierced lattice work in mirror designs as seen on the title page of his A New Book of Ornaments for Looking Glass Frames (1st edition c. 1752, reissued in 1769; E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Designs, Woodbridge, 2000, p. 342). A rare Chinese export plate, circa 1770, decorated with a Masonic scene of three figures around a cubic stone, looking at plans, with mason's tools around them, 22.5cm diameter. The subject probably refers to the building of the Temple of Solomon, and the service from which this plate came may have been commissioned for the founding of a lodge. The design appears to have been copied from an engraving by Benjamin Cole (1695-1766) for a summons of the Dundee Arms Lodge.Small chips / fritting to rim, and some minor gilt and enamel wear.
