A pair of Chinese famille rose plates, Qianlong 1736-95, brightly decorated with tree peony, other flowers and foliage, and an armorial plate decorated with a central roundel of peacocks with other birds and foliage in cartouches around the rim, all on a gold diaper ground, bearing the arms of Lawson quartering Jessop, Yongzheng c.1730, 28.5cm max. (3) Cf. D S Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol I, p.256, E14 for the armorial plate.
A Chinese armorial small plate, c.1795, the centre decorated with the arms of Annesley, for Earl Annesley, the rim enamelled with a grapevine garland in blue and gilt, 19.4cm. Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection. Purchased from Sotheby`s in 1975. The title Earl Annesley was created in August 1789 for Francis Annesley, 2nd Viscount Glerawly. The title continues today.
A Chinese armorial octagonal soup plate, c.1780, decorated with the arms of Henley, Earl of Northington, painted with scattered flowers, butterflies and insects within two narrow bands of gilt leaves on a green ground, 23.7cm. Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection. This service was made for the 2nd Earl of Northington and the bulk of the service can be traced from his ownership through the Scarsdale of Kedleston and Henry Ford II, to a private collection in Portugal, where it resides at present. This plate and a trencher salt in America are believed to be the only two pieces separate from the rest of the service.
A Chinese armorial plate, 1st half 18th century, decorated with the arms of Yonge, within elaborate borders of tied scrolls, vases and other auspicious objects in red and gilt, 23cm. Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection. Purchased from Heirloom and Howard in 1981. This plate was made for Sir William Yonge, 4th Baronet, MP and Secretary of State for War in the Walpole administration from 1735-41. He was also a Knight founder of the Order of the Bath in 1725.
A fine Chinese armorial plate, c.1760, decorated with the arms of Stepney with Lloyd in pretence, the rim with single flower sprays outside a gilt spearhead border, 23cm. Provenance: Mark Murray-Threipland, Fingask Castle, Errol, Perthshire. Christie`s House sale, April 1993. The Clifford Henderson collection.
