A Chinese celadon jade tripod cup, probably Ming dynasty, carved in low relief with an archaistic taotie design, with an ‘archer’s ring’ handle, on three figural feet, the stone of pale celadon tone with russet and cream inclusions, 10cm high, later wood stand and box. Provenance: purchased from Jade House, Kowloon, Hong Kong, 17th Septemeber 1955 for HK$ 450. Literature: see Roger Keverne (Consultant Editor), Jade, Anness Publishing 1991, figures 25 and 35 for illustrations of similar cups. See Sotheby’s , Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art sale, 20th March 2007, Lot 623 for a similar cup. Also a similar cup can be found in René-Yvon Lefebvre d’Argencé, Chinese Jades in the Avery Brundage Collection, San Francisco, 1972, plate L, p. 115, where it is mentioned that a comparable cup excavated from a Ming dynasty tomb dated 1676 and located outside of Beijing, is illustrated in Wenwu, Beijing, 1963, fig. 18, no. 1, p. 42

A scarce coloured Doultonware General Gordon commemorative jug, first version recording his exploits to 1884, the year before his death, relief portrait within wreath, and inscriptions “ ‘Chinese’ Gordon, born Jan 28 1833 - Crimea 1855-6, Leader of the Ever Victorious Army China 1860” on one side and “Governor General of the Soudan 1874. ‘By the help of God I will hold the balance level’ Khartoum 1884”, marked “Doulton Lambeth” on base with potters marks and 1884, height 7½”; later versions of this jug, produced up to 1905, had various inscriptions recording his death in Jan, 1885. AN 18TH CENTURY CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE PLATE, the centre painted with two cartouches each incorporating a river landscape and flanking a central circular panel with flower spray, amongst further pine tree and scrolling foliate decoration, 9" diameter; and a similar plate painted with precious objects, 9" diameter (2) (see group illustration).

A rare Chinese enamel stem bowl and cover, finely painted with three panels depicting Europeans in Classical dress on an elaborate ground richly painted with an abundance of flowers, leaves and scrolls, the flared foot and cover decorated with bands of fruit and foliage and with four pink bat motifs encircling the top, unmarked, Qianlong 1736-95, small repaired chips to the top of the cover, 13cm. (2) Provenance: Sackville, 5th Earl of Yarborough. Cf. Lloyd-Hyde, Chinese Painted Enamels, The China Institute in America, no. 19 for a related plate, also illustrated by Howard & Ayers, China for the West, Chinese Porcelain and Other Decorative Arts for Export, illus. from the Mottahedeh collection, no. 662. One panel depicts Ceres, Pomona and Flora beneath a tree, another shows Vertumnus and Pomona with Cupid at their feet, cf. Hervouet, pp.297 & 309, Nos. 13.22 & 13.67.
