BATMAN (196Final Production Scripts (2), 65 & 67 Pages (8.5" x 11") Autographed by Burgess Meredith (Episode 3; Fine Feathered Finks) (Beckett COA.). 20th Century Fox TV, 1965 & 1966Offered in this lot are two great rainbow scripts for two of television's most famous cult favorites. One script is from Fine Feathered Finks, dated November 19, 1965, and is signed by Burgess Meredith to Mark. Meredith played the villain Penguin throughout the series and was iconic. This episode was the first to star Meredith and aired within the first season. The other script is Death in Slow-Motion and is dated March 7, 1966. This episode stars Frank Gorshin as the Riddler and also aired in the first season. The autograph is authenticated and includes an additional COA from Beckett Authentication Services. When Hugh Hefner screened all 15 chapters of the 1943 Batman serial at the Playboy Mansion in 1964, he could hardly have known that he was setting off a chain of events that would lead to the development of one of the most iconic TV shows of the 1960s. Starring Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin, the show was a crazy, colorful, campy adaptation of the character, one that was instantly embraced by a public already enthralled by the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and setting off a wave of "Batmania" that would sweep the world. LALIQUE: ENAMEL, PÂTE DE VERRE, SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND BROOCH/PENDANT, CIRCA 1900The oval-cut sapphire, weighing 7.75 carats, set among white opalescent pâte de verre flowering buds and blossoms with blue enamel stamens, the cushion-shaped diamond stems issuing green to dark green enamel foliage, suspending from an associated chain with enamelled twisted baton links, signed Lalique, French assay mark (partially obscured), chain with French assay mark and maker's mark (partially obscured), later brooch fitting and pendant loop, some enamel loss, lengths: pendant/brooch 6.8cm, chain 47.5cmFootnotes:René Lalique (1860-1945) was the undisputed master of Art Nouveau jewellery design. Nature was a pivotal theme in his work, his appreciation stemming from time spent sketching in the French countryside during his childhood holidays. His work incorporates botanically correct depictions of plants and flowers, often representing less conventional aspects such as buds, stamens and contorted vines and branches, with a unique focus on the ephemerality of nature with wilting, humble wild flowers or seasonal decay. Here, the use of white anemone flowers, symbols of sincerity and fragility, frame the sapphire, enhancing the quality of this exquisite jewel. During the 1880's, Lalique worked for various manufacturers and passionately studied sculpture, marrying the daughter of a sculptor in 1890. It was around this time that he undertook experiments in glass, a natural development from his enamelling techniques, and from here his work begins to take on a strongly sculptural form. The pâte de verre, pioneered in the 19th century, is a painstakingly delicate process of cold-moulding glass and later vitrifying it with heat, and yields a uniquely translucent, quasi-ceramic quality, which can later be carved to achieve high definition and fine detail. This incorporation of an intrinsically valueless material into jewels with precious gemstones and metals demonstrates Lalique's desire to create an entirely new kind of jewel. For a similar example previously sold by Bonhams, please see Lot 20, a pâte de verre and sapphire anemone brooch, from the London Fine Jewellery Sale, 12th December 1997. See also Becker, V., 'The Jewellery of René Lalique', (Goldsmiths Company: 1987), ill.p. 33, 50, 82, 93 for similar examples by Lalique. Please note, this lot has VAT at a preferential rate of 5% on the Hammer Price and VAT at the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Barten, René Lalique Schmuk und Objects d'Art 1890-1910, Munich, 1977, ill.p.344, no.733.René Lalique (1860-1945) was the undisputed master of Art Nouveau jewellery design. Nature was a pivotal theme in his work, his appreciation stemming from time spent in the French countryside during his childhood holidays. Here, Lalique has used plique-à-jour enamel to represent the delicate transparency of dragonfly wings. This intricate process of placing glass between fine windows of metal was initially used in the Middle Ages, but saw a resurgence in the second half of the 19th century and was used masterfully by Art Nouveau jewellers, who elevated the technique to the highest level of quality. It is possible that he may have been an apprentice in the workshop of Castellani, an idea supported by the clear similarities in styles and subject matter. In 1846 he opened his own shop in Florence, later moving to a Renaissance palazzo at 20 Piazza di Spagna, next to the Spanish Steps in Rome. Today the building is a national monument and regarded as one of the most important historic buildings in Rome. Renamed Palazzo Pierret, his name can still be seen above the entrance. ENAMEL INSECT PENDANT WATCH, CIRCA 1865Realistically modelled as a scarab, with fine engraved detail throughout and applied legs to the reverse, the spring-loaded enamelled wings opening to reveal a circular dial with Roman numerals, outer minute markers, blued steel hands, mounted in gold, with cabochon ruby eyes, suspended from a fancy-link chain, with winding key, some enamel loss, lengths: pendant 4.7cm, chain 65.5cm, Footnotes:Pocket and fob watches have taken many shapes forms since their conception. In the 16th century there was a trend for unusually shaped watches and clocks shaped like books, animals, insects, flora, fauna and even skulls (Death's head watches). In the late 17th century, with the invention of waistcoats, the pocket watch evolved into its 'typical' flattened circular form. However, in the mid-late 19th century, a taste for the novelty returned and various whimsical designs began to appear. As a sacred symbol and talisman in Ancient Egyptian culture, 'Scarab amulets' became increasingly popular as expeditions to Egypt brought a wealth of visual culture to jewellery designers and casemakers. In ancient Egyptian religion, the sun god Ra was said to roll across the sky each day, and as such the scarab beetle was a symbol for the heavenly cycle, and the concepts of rebirth and regeneration.
