A GOLD 'ALHAMBRA' SAUTOIR NECKLACE, BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS, CIRCA 1970Composed of twenty quatrefoil-shaped links with textured gold detailing and within beaded gold frames, connected by a hammered trace-link chain, in 18K gold, signed VCA, numbered B4050 R64, with maker's mark 'Sté RW' for Georges Richards and Wildenstein, French assay mark, length 80cmGeorges Richards and Wildenstein were Parisian workshops who worked for Van Cleef & Arpels, amongst others, at least during the 70s and 80sIn 1968 Van Cleef & Arpel’s iconic four-leaf clover sautoir known as ‘Alhambra’ debuted to the world. The symbol of luck, it has become an immediately recognisable signature of the renowned jewellery house and is probably the most easily wearable piece of high jewellery in existence. Although the use of flowers and clovers occurred often prior to the creation of the Alhambra, the simple line of the sautoir signalled a defining moment in style history both for Van Cleef & Arpels and for high jewellery in general.Delicate, sophisticated, and effortlessly stylish, the subtle yellow gold chain plays host to a series of yellow gold beaded silhouettes, each gently framing a selection of nature’s finest and most precious materials from white and grey mother-of-pearl, to malachite, carnelian, lapis lazuli, ivory and coral or, as exemplified here, all gold. It is an embodiment of the skilled lapidaries, jewellers, stone-setters and polishers whose craft makes the Alhambra so effortless and fluid. While the Alhambra has had many patrons, none has been more illustrious than the beautiful Princess Grace, or Grace Kelly as she was previously known. Although as a favoured muse of the house, she owned a virtual treasure trove of gems by Van Cleef & Arpels, her everyday jewellery box contained three Alhambra sautoirs. One in malachite, one in tortoiseshell and one in coral, just like the one included in this sale. Interestingly, the malachite edition was limited to only 100 pieces due to the rarity of the material. Each of these is numbered and can still be identified today.Van Cleef & Arpels continue to create and renew the Alhambra as time goes. However, none are more coveted than the original first collection from 1968.Condition Report: Minor signs of wear, overall in good conditionNumbered B4050 R64, with maker's mark 'Sté RW' for Georges Richards and WildensteinGeorges Richards and Wildenstein were Parisian workshops who worked for Van Cleef & Arpels, amongst others, at least during the 70s and 80sTotal gross weight approx. 53.60g

Throughout his work, Fasano adhered to the traditional practices of Parisian jewellers, and, while styles changed, the craftmanship that lay at the heart of their work was honoured by him throughout his life. He married Stella Piovano in 1932 and she was to be his life-long partner in every sense of the term. Together in 1935 they opened their first store in Piazza Castello, the heart of Turin’s lively social scene. As the white gems and platinum of the 1930s gave way to the bold colours and yellow gold of the 1940s and 50s, Fasano’s signature pheasant or ‘Fagiona’ brooch, the emblem of his maison, became a recognisable staple in the world of fine Italian jewellery. As the 50s progressed, Fasano’s and Stella’s attention moved more towards the selection of precious and unusual stones, favouring cabochon cuts and those less traditional cuts. When their son Dario Fasano joined the family business in the 1960s, the older generation drew on his experiences studying abroad to bring a fresher spin on their materials and techniques, such as lava stone and gold/bronze combinations.Fasano Jewellers closed operations in 2013, but their pieces still embody some of the best in mid-century jewellery.Condition Report: Diamonds: approx. 1.50ct total, unable to assess colour due to yellow mount, estimated clarity VSSapphires: of blue hue, medium to dark tone, facets are smooth, overall well matched in colourNormal signs of wear, overall in good conditionTotal gross weight approx. 18.4g
