A small Qajar coco-de-mer begging bowl (kashkul) and an engraved brass inkwellIran, 19th centurythe kashkul in the form of a nut with an opening at the top, carved in relief with a pole medallion containing a floral spray on the bottom, flanked by cartouches containing inscription, above a band of inscription filled cartouches, the rim with a bird and a lion's head, with suspension loops and chain, 12.5 cm. long; the lidded inkwell of cylindrical form with openwork oval cartouches alternating with cartouches containing figures,8.3cm. high(2) Footnotes: Provenance:The kashkul, offered at Bonhams, 4 October 2011, Lot 223The inkwell, Sotheby's 24 April 1997, Lot 802 (part lot) The kashkul inscriptions in the cartouches on the shoulders comprise a quatrain by Omar Khayyam:"At dawn, a call came through the tavern O revellers of the tavern Arise! [W]Condition Report: Dial appears in good condition overall, no significant cracks or hairlines, there are light surface scratches throughout and flea bites / nibbles to the dial edge and face but these are quite minor, the largest of which can be seen at 5 o'clock in the images.
