Bourbon monarchs united France and part of the kingdom of Navarre in 1589, ruling both until the French Revolution of 1792. Restored briefly in 1814 and finally in 1815 after the fall of the First French Empire, the senior line of the Bourbons was overthrown again in the July Revolution of 1830. A cadet Bourbon branch, the House of Orléans, then ruled for 18 years (1830–1848), until it too was deposed.William Howley was born in Ropley, Hampshire, where his father was a vicar. He was educated at Winchester College and later New College at Oxford. He was an active English Freemason, having joined Bristol's 'Royal York Lodge' in 1791. He became Chaplain to the Marquess of Abercorn in 1792, whose influence was critical in advancing his early career. William Howley married Mary Frances Belli in 1805 and the couple had two sons (neither reached adulthood) and three daughters. In 1809 he was appointed Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford University. In October 1813, at Lambeth Palace, he was consecrated Bishop of London and became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1828. Howley was Archbishop of Canterbury during the repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts (1828), the Emancipation of the Catholics (1829) and the passing of the Great Reform Act (1832). The pearl has a silvery-white hue with subtle iridescence and surface blemishes/creases, measuring approximately 5.5mm diameter. A diamond panel bracelet, designed as a series of openwork navette-shaped panels, millegrain set with old and lasque-cut diamonds, spaced by similarly set transitional-cut diamonds edged with scalloped decoration, on an expanding baton-link bracelet, two colour precious metal mounted, total weight of transitional and old-cut diamonds approximately 0.60ct, length 16.5cmThe principal diamonds are well matched, bright and lively, one stone with a surface-reaching fracture, the remaining stones with estimated VS2 to SI2 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. The transitional diamonds graduate from approximately 0.10ct to 0.12ct each in size. Lasque-cut diamonds have a typically greyish, fractured and chipped appearance. The settings and bracelet links have general surface wear, with occasional shallow dings/impressions to the baton links and some play to the bracelet springs. The tongue clasp is loose fitting and the safety chain is broken. Length of diamond set section 6.5cm. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approximately 10.2gm.
A diamond cluster pendant/brooch, centred with an old-cut diamond of yellow tint in pinched collet setting, within an openwork border of smaller old-cut diamonds, to a crescent-shaped surround of graduated similarly-cut diamonds, spaced by lasque-cut diamond points, with detachable diamond set pendant bale and detachable brooch fitting, accompanied by Wartski retailer's case and purchase receipt dated 1969, and an unassociated curb-link chain, principal diamond weight approximately 2.35ct, remaining total diamond weight approximately 2.80ct, total length 3.3cmThe principal diamond draws a pronounced yellow tint and has strong bluish fluorescence under LWUV, with scattered small nicks, chips and naturals to the girdle. The outline is off-round but faceting is fairly symmetrical. Estimated SI1 to SI2 clarity, assessed mounted. Principal diamond dimensions approximately 8.9mm to 9.2mm diameter x 4.75mm depth. The bordering old-cut diamonds are bright and lively with slightly variable clarity, some stones with chips, nicks and surface-reaching fractures. These diamonds have estimated H to K colour and VS1 to P2 clarity, assessed mounted (those with chips/fractures have P2 clarity) and graduate from approximately 0.23ct to 0.01ct in size. Lasque-cut diamonds have a typically greyish, fractured appearance.It is possible that the outer crescent-shaped border has been later added to the central cluster setting but both appear to be of a similar age, which is likely to be late 19th/early 20th century. The settings are probably a gold/silver combination, but are untested as such, and have considerable dark tarnishing/fire staining. The mount has surface wear throughout, with slight thinning to the edges of some settings. Width of mount 2.65cm. The detachable brooch fitting has a fairly modern visor clasp that functions and is accompanied by a screwdriver. Gross weight of pendant/brooch (including fittings) approximately 8.6gm. The chain is untested for metal standard, gross weight approximately 2.7gm, length 51.5cm.

A pair of amethyst cufflinks, each with a pair of oval cabochon amethysts in closed-back collet settings, on chain-link fittings, 9ct gold mounted, maker's mark EWV, setting length 1.45cmAmethysts are well matched, of deep pinkish-purple hues, with fracture, fissure and 'tiger's stripe' inclusions visible under close inspection. Some of the fractures/fissures are surface-reaching and the amethysts may be foil-backed. The amethysts and settings have surface scuffs and small chips/nicks commensurate for light use. Marks are clearly struck, for London 1975. Gross weight approximately 9.6gm.
A 19th century Archaeological Revival brooch, designed as a shaped bar with red paste accent, suspending an amphora-shaped scent bottle from chain-link swags, with detachable stopper, decorated throughout with ropetwist wirework and bead borders, length 4.6cmDent/impression and scattered pinpoint-shaped dings to reverse of bar. The bar and amphora drop are both hollow and have general surface wear, scuffs, scratches and nicks/chips throughout. There is a cluster of very smal holes to one side of the amphora drop, which may be part of manufacture. Both of the swags have dark solder joins/repairs at the junctions to the drop. Ropetwist and bead decoration appears to be mostly present and crisp. Untested as gold/gilt metal. The brooch pin is currently functioning. Gross weight approximately 6.2gm.

Principal diamond weight approximately 0.10ct. Small mineral inclusions and feather/fractures are visible to the garnet, which may be foil-backed.
