A rare Charles II oak coffer, West Country, dated 1661, having a quadruple-panelled lid, the front of three panels, each unusually carved with a large stylized male face roundel within a leafy-carved surround, the central panel additionally headed by the initials ‘WC’ and date ‘1661’, the muntin rails guilloche-carved with dog-tooth edges, the chain-carved base rail with scroll-carved spandrels, the twin-panelled sides each carved with a five-petal flowerhead and arrow-head spandrels, interior with lidded till, 139.5cm wide, 58.5cm deep, 73.5cm high.The central face, with a distinctive pointed-beard, may reference Charles I. This chest was made within one year, or even possibly just months after the Restoration of the Stuart Monarchy. As many Royalists returned from exile they were keen to demonstrate their support for King Charles II and his ‘unfortunate’ father and as a result the image of Charles I became a popular decorative theme.

The first crafted in copper applied overall with a bronze finish, set with a dragon handle and a curved spout issuing from the mouth of a further dragon, the shoulder and neck with copper applications showing the bajixiang and a band of lotus petals, the circular cover with a lotus bud finial and attached to the handle by a chain. The second crafted in copper, set with a mythical brass beast handle and a curved spout issuing from the mouth of a further beast, the shoulder and neck with brass applications showing floral scroll, the circular cover with a lotus bud finial and attached to the handle by a chain.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, occasional light scratches, and few minuscule nicks. In the shape of a Tibetan ewer, the gilt copper body of tapering cylindrical form with a broad, curved spout and strap handle. The cover still connected to the handle by the original chain and with a large finial in the form of a foliate lotus bud. All decorated in bright enamels against a blue ground, showing Buddhist lions, lotus on continuous scrolling stems as well as ruyi bands.Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear, some tiny losses, dings, and surface scratches.
