Service Record: 24 Sep 1855 Staff Acting Assistant Surgeon. Malta 3 Nov 1855 Arrived from England en route to the Crimea but was taken on the strength of the garrison. 10 Dec 1855 Left for Scutari. Malta 1856 Returned from the Crimea. 13 Sep 1856 Reduced but re-appointed on 10 March 1857. In 1856, there was a reduction of the Army Medical establishment when several junior medical officers commissioned in 1855 remained unemployed for some months. On their re-appointment, however, their commissions were antedated to the orignal state. 1857 Served in China (Shahabad Campaign). 23 Apr 1858 Assistant Surgeon 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment of Foot. 22 Oct 1861 Assistant Surgeon 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot. 21 Oct 1862 Staff Assistant Surgeon. 9 Oct 1863 Reduced to half-pay. Comprising: India General Service Medal 1895-1902 with Relief of Chitral 1895 clasp (7204 L Corpl J. Cam 1st Bn K.R.Rifle Corps); Queen’s South Africa medal with five clasps Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, Transvaall, Laing’s New, Orange Free State (7204 Serge: J. Cam. K.R.R.C.); King’s South Africa medal with South Africa 1902 clasp (7204 Serjt: J. Cam. King’s Rl Rif); Delhi Durbar 1911 medal (7204 C/S CAM KRRC); and an Edward VII Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (7204 C.SJT: J. Cam K.R.R.C.) Notes: Born in the parish of Retford, Nottinghamshire, Joseph Cam enlisted in the King's Royal Rifle Corps at Sheffield, Yorkshire in March 1892, aged 21 years. Posted to the 1st Battalion in India in December 1893, he was subsequently present as a Lance-Corporal in the relief of Chitral operations (Medal & clasp). Discharged at Canterbury in February 1886. Having then been advanced to Corporal in January 1897, he was embarked for South Africa in May 1899 where he was wounded by gunshot after he quickly saw action at Talana and in the defence of Ladysmith. He was afterwards employed in operations in Transvaal and the Orange Free State, but he was invalided home after being hit in the left leg by a Mauser bullet at Amersfoort on 7 August 1900. In the following year, and having joined the 4th Battalion as a Sergeant, he returned to South Africa, but he broke his leg jumping off a runaway wagon. He was admitted to hospital at Harrismith and invalided home (Queen's Medal & 5 clasps; King's Medal & 2 clasps). Cam was appointed an Orderly Room Colour-Sergeant in July 1903 and went on to serve in India in the period December 1909 to March 1914. He was recommended for his L.S. & G.C. Medal in July 1910 and was awarded the Delhi Durbar Medal in the following year. He took his discharge on returning to the U.K., having recently been advanced to Orderly Room Q.M. Sergeant; above details courtesy of the Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum, Winchester. Wounded 7th August 1900 at Amersfoort. India 1895 1 of 821. QSA/KSA - 1 of 3 pairs to the regiment. Note: William Henry Owen was born in 1875 at Fort George, Madras, India, and attested for the 14th Hussars at London on 26 April 1890. He was appointed a Bandsman on 6 November 1893, and was promoted Corporal on 9 October 1899. He served with the Regiment in South Africa from 14 December 1899 until 9 August 1902, and was promoted Sergeant whilst in South Africa on 9 September 1901. Posted to the 20th Hussars on 7 September 1906, he transferred with the rank of Bandmaster to the Leicestershire Regiment on 19 February 1908, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 1 October of that year. He was finally discharged on 18 February 1913 after 22 years and 299 days' service, having spent the last five years in India.

DCM London Gazette 27th September 1901; AO 15/02; MID LG 10.9.01, P.5958; ML 211; MEDAL TO HOSPITAL SHIP NUBIA Note: Frederick Stanley Marshland was born in Malta in 1865 and attested for the Medical Staff Corps at Aldershot on 20 February 1885, having previously served as a Chemist and Druggist. Promoted Corporal on 2 October 1889, and Sergeant on 13 July 1892, he was advanced to Staff Sergeant 2nd Class, Royal Army Medical Corps, on 30 June 1899, and served with the Corps in South Africa from 2 November 1899 until 6 April 1903. For his services in South Africa he was promoted Staff Sergeant on 30 August 1900, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 4 September 1901). Returning home, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 75 of April 1904. He was discharged on 29 July 1908, after 23 years and 161 days’ service, the last four years of which were spent in the Nursing Section.
