A group of medals to include WWI War and Victory pair awarded to M-344779 Pte. J.E. Gatrell, A.S.C., WWII War and Defence Medals and 1939-1945 and Burma Stars and further mixed including WWI Red Cross Society for War Service medal and badges, a cloth V.A.D. General Service badge, Coronation and Jubilee medals, a gilt, hallmarked silver and enamel Salvation Army medal with presentation inscription 'To J. Mason Porter. JP. from General Erik Wickberg 3rd November 1973', further miscellaneous badges including Sunday School etc.
The hilt is of brass, the gilt is worn on the normal handhold places. The sword features a motif of floral which run from the pommel down the back strap and are continued on the flat knuckle bow surfaces, the ferrule has an oak leaf sprig motif, the obverse guard features an open-winged Army eagle which looks to the viewer's left, the grip is in aluminum black painted (partial original paint), with filigree wire, the lion’s head with stones “red eyesâ€. Blade length 90 cm, steel scabbard, black painted. Good condition. Germany manufacture: E. Pack & Solingen (stamped on blade). Rare! II R!
THE ANGEL OF PEACE watercolour on card 29 x 23.5cm Born the son of an army officer, he was educated Fettes and Edinburgh University, and later studied art at the Slade under Alphonse Legros. During 1884-1885 he studied in Paris under Boulanger and from 1886-1887 under Cormon. He joined the staff of Daily Graphic in 1890. He was a member of NEAC from 1893, ARWS 1910 and RWS 1920, and was married to flower painter Lily Blatherwick.
