WARTIME SCOTLAND - ENGLAND Programme for a game in Ceylon ( now Sri Lanka), played on St Andrews Day 1946, 30/11/46, Scotland v England on The Sports Club Grounds , Galle Face. Players drawn from RAF, Navy and Army plus civilians but not known if any were professionals. Four page programme, folds. Generally good
WARTIME ITALY Programme for game played in Trieste Stadium, Italy 17/6/45, 13 Corps XI v Eighth Army Touring XI, players from various clubs and included Stewart and Thornton (Glasgow Rangers), Fields (Arsenal), Jones (Burnley), Johnson (Derby), Finney, Beattie both Preston, Hamilton (Aberdeen), Squires (Swansea) and various others, slight folds. Generally good
NAPLES 45 Four page programme for Challenge match between The Eight Army XI and 3 District West at Vomera Stadium, Naples, 29/7/45, Eighth Army XI included players from Rangers, Hearts, Wolves, Brentford, Swansea, Leeds, Preston whilst the 3 District West side were represented by players from Bradford City, West Brom, Arbroath, Distillery, Halifax, Swindon, Bolton etc. Some creasing and a little worn. Fair
WARTIME 1945 Single sheet programme, 21/4/45, 5 Army v 1 District. The 5th Army were in North Africa, Egypt and Italy in the War and it is likely that this game took place in Italy. Part of the Jesse Pye collection originally and he played for 1 District with other players from Fulham, Wolves, Man City, Preston, St Johnstone, Arsenal, Tottenham, Third Lanark, Cardiff and others. Generally good

WARTIME 1945 Four page programme, Eighth Army XI v 3 District (West), 29/7/45 in Naples, Italy. The Eighth Army won 2-1 according to the score noted on the front. The goals were scored by Hamilton (Hearts) and Thornton (Rangers) with Wilkins of Brentford replying for 3 District West. All the players on both sides played for Football League or Scottish League clubs including Leicester, Wolves, Brentford, Hearts, Rangers, Leeds and Preston. Slight fold. Generally good

With Notices of the so-called 'Amazons', the Grand Customs, the Yearly Customs, the Human Sacrifices, the Present State of the Slave Trade, and the Negro's Place in Nature, 2 vol., first edition, half-titles, wood-engraved frontispieces, foxing, original purple pictorial cloth, gilt, a little rubbed, spines faded, corners bumped, [Penzer p.72], 8vo, 1864.⁂ Burton travelled to Dahome in an attempt to persuade the brutal King Gelele, with his army of female "Amazons", to abandon his practices of slave-trading and human sacrifice; he was unsuccessful.
Cryptography.- Hermann (Arthur-Joseph) Nouveau Système de Correspondance Secrète: Méthode pour Chiffrer et Déchiffrer les Dépêches Secrètes, first edition, signed and inscribed by the author to the King of Sweden and Norway on upper wrapper, 3 plates for coding & decoding printed in black & red and/or blue, 2 double-page, 1892; Le Livre des Clefs: Système Cryptographique Complet, tables, with loosely inserted folding table for coding/decoding printed in red and black (dissected and mounted on both sides on linen) and thick card cipher wheel titled 'Cercles Cryptographiques A.Hermann' but lacking volvelle, both a little soiled and browned, 1892, together 2 vol. in 1, contemporary half roan, with original printed upper wrapper to first vol. bound in (inscribed), worn, spine defective and becoming loose, tall 8vo, Paris, Librairie Scientifique A.Hermann⁂ Scarce work on cryptography. In 1893 Herman proposed the idea of strip ciphers which were used by the US Army from World War I onwards. COPAC lists only one copy (BL).

WWI Trio of Medals, consisting of 14/15 Star, War and Victory medals, to:56647 Private E. Smith Royal Army Medical Corps including an "On Active Service" book to the 54th Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C Private Smith's name is on page 51; WWII pair consisting of Defence and War Medal; a white metal cigarette lighter dated 1920; commemorative medallion.

A WWI and Later Medal Trio, comprising 1914/15 Star, War and Victory Medals to 62236 Sapper J. Wright, Royal Engineers, in glazed frame with two photographs and a "Leaving The Army" letter; together with a small archive of paperwork and photographs including a letter from one of Sapper Wright's sons dated 1943. John Wright also served in the Second World War and was a founder member of "71 Mess" Fellowship of the Services Association; a Belgian silk cushion cover embroidered 'Ypres', and a humorous figure of Kaiser Bill as a match holder.
