Mannerist school of the late 16th century."The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian".Oil on canvas. Re-drawn.It presents important faults on the pictorial surface.Measurements: 158 x 104 cm; 171 x 118 cm (frame). The scene, which takes place in a completely dynamic setting, presents the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The author has chosen the most dramatic moment as the action of the martyrdom is about to take place. The protagonist, tied to a tree, maintains a gesture of acceptance without drama but with acceptance of his destiny. Just above, an angel and the divine lightning approach the figure of Saint Sebastian, thus showing his divine protection. On the right-hand side of the composition a multitude of soldiers congregate, some of them with bows drawn and arrows ready to strike the half-naked body of the saint. Finally, the scene unfolds in depth, populated with characters in keeping with the hagiographic story. The treatment of colour, with a palette of iridescent colours that only darken in the final shots. The technical characteristics, such as the modelling of the forms, the tonalities used, the type of composition and even the aesthetic details used, make this work part of the Mannerist school. In fact, a very characteristic feature of this school is the anatomical elongation that can be seen in all the figures, especially in that of the main figure,Saint Sebastian (Narbonne, 256 - Rome, 288) was a soldier in the Roman army during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, who appointed him head of the first cohort of the Praetorian Guard until he discovered that he was a Christian. When the saint refused to convert, he was condemned to death: the soldiers tied him to a post and flogged him, leaving him for dead; his friends found him still alive and a Christian noblewoman, Irene, cured him; Sebastian returned to the emperor, reproaching him for his treatment of Christians, condemning him again to be flogged, this time killing him. In art, his depictions are frequent, usually with arrows in his body and bound.

Benedetto Boschetti (Italian, fl. 1820-70): A patinated bronze figure of 'The Dying Gaul'After the antique, second quarter 19th centurythe wounded warrior on an oval base, signed B. BOSHETTI, ROMA, supported on a later antico rosso oval plinth raised on bun feet, 40.5cm long overall, 23.2cm high overallFootnotes:In the early 19th Century Benedetto Boschetti fed the growing demand for high quality works of art with an antique theme created by an influx of grand tourists, many of whom were English. Little is known about his life, but he is known to have worked out of his workshops in the centre of Rome where he produced a large number of classically inspired objects ranging from bronzes to tabletops and mosaics. Active between 1820-1870, the Boschetti workshop exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851. The workshop was renowned for the exceptional quality of its copies after the 'Antique', mainly in marble and bronze.First recorded in the Ludovisi Collection in 1623, the antique marble known as 'The Dying Gaul' was acquired for the Capitoline Museums by Pope Clement XII, before being ceded to the French in 1797. The sculpture arrived in Paris in a triumphal procession and was housed in the Musée Central des Arts. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, it was returned to the Capitoline Museums, where its fame was such that it was displayed in a dedicated room named after it. The subject was long interpreted as a Gladiator until late 19th-century scholarship identified the poignant figure as a wounded Galatian, whose army invaded the Hellenistic kingdom of Pergamon in the third century AD. Since the marble's discovery, its popularity has spawned numerous reductions in bronze, marble and alabaster.Related LiteratureF. Haskell and N. Penny, Taste and the Antique. David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Battle of the Bulge - Armor" Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Battle of the Bulge 1944 - Armor stamp issued December 16, 1994. In the beginning, the Ardennes offensive went well for the German army. By December 17, General Hasso-Eccard von Manteuffel's forces had decimated the U.S. 110th infantry regiment outside Bastogne. U.S. General Troy H. Middleton responded by sending his reserve tanks to halt the Germans. Although they, too, were overwhelmed, their sacrifice prevented an early German breakthrough into Bastogne. On December 18, more reinforcements arrived. Tanks of the U.S. 3rd Army were joined by men of the 101st Airborne Division, commanded by Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe. The beleaguered Americans formed a defensive arc around Bastogne. On December 26, General George Patton's tanks broke through the German lines and linked up with McAuliffe's men to turn the tide of battle. Image Size: 22 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 27 x 23.75 in. Unframed. (B14875)
