Los 44A

A First World War Ottoman Turkish Army officer's belt buckle

Los 3331

Dated 1815 AD. First restoration. Obv: profile bust with LOUIS XVIII ROI DE FRANCE legend. Rev: crowned arms within wreath with PIECE DE 20 FRANCS legend with date and 'lis' and 'R' mintmarks below for London mint. 6.42 grams. KM# 706.7; Fr. 531; see Dyer, G. P. A New History of the Royal Mint, p.473 for details of this issue. After Napoleon Bonaparte escaped from Elba, it is claimed that Louis XVIII gave consent to the striking of French 20 franc gold coins at the Royal Mint, London, for the use of the British army to pay the troops in France in 1815, in the period before the battle of Waterloo; the French minting authorities were appalled and minting in London ceased after striking 871,581 coins; for a while, they were accepted in for exchange by the French mints and the majority were smelted; it has been suggested that the use of the letter 'R' as a mintmark was connected with the banker Rothschild who is said to have supported the issue. Good very fine. Scarce.

Los 590

Dated 1900 AD. A manuscript leaf of a firman (official royal decree"). from the court of Mozaffar al-din Shah bestowing a diamond-studded epaulette on a fabric backing with the seal, logo and signature of the fifth and last Qajar king, (1896-1907); the text hand-written in Nasta'liq script to Mohammed-Reza Mirza with the title of Rokn al-Saltaneh, a royal family member and son of the Qajar king Nasser al-din-shah, the prior ruler to Mozaffar. 92 grams, 77 x 51.5cm (30 1/4 x 20 1/4"). Property of an American lady; acquired 1970s-1990s. Fine condition, short edges cracked. Mohammed-Reza Mirza was in charge of the Iranian army and was given the highest honour of the diamond-studded epaulette. It is unusual for the Shah to have part of a firman in his own handwriting, because firmans were usually created by expert craftsmen. Mozaffar al-Din personally hand-wrote part of the text to refer to Mohammed-Reza as Jalal Al Dovleh. Mozaffar al-din Shah's frequent visits to London opened a pathway for British trade and influence in Iran, and the English political process began to flourish giving the Pahlavi Regime an inherited foundation to open the gateway into Europe and Britain for westernisation. Unfortunately, Mozaffar's addiction to opium produced a short reign. However having Mohammed-Reza Mirza at his side and with a princely education in London and Europe bestowed by the influence of the prior king Nasser al-din, gave him the flexibility and knowledge to broker deals with the British wherever Mozaffar was lacking. Along with the Iranian prime minister, Amin al-Soltan, also mentioned, his control of the army subdued the general negative publicity and changed public opinion to set the groundwork for modernisation.

Our Miss Fred UK quad folded. Condition C8 Very Fine, see glossary for all condition scales. Fred Wimbush (Danny La Rue) is a serious stage actor who is about to offer his Hamlet to the British public, but unfortunately for him the Second World War intervenes. He is recruited into the army and trains as a mechanic, but while there he still gets to perform, only this time as a drag act in one of the armys stage troupes. So it that Fred is halfway through one of his performances in France when the Nazis interrupt and arrest his entire company - but not him, as he is dressed as a woman. Escaping in heels and a spangly gown might not be everyones idea of a great disguise, but it will have to do
