Kajetan Soltyk, Bishop of Kraków and Duke of Siewierz (1759-1782), formerly Bishop of Kiev (1756-1759). Private Gold Ducat, 1762, 3.01g. 20.7mm. Kraków. Capped bishop's bust left clad in ecclesiastical robes; CAL.SOLTYK EPI: CRAC: DUX SEVERIAE. Rev. MONETA AUREA DUCATVS SEVERIAE A.1762 in five lines within wreath (Kop.6506 - R8, Hcz 9947 - R8, Fr.54 - plate coin). Excessively rare. Slightly wavy flan. Good Very Fine. Ex Henry V. Karolkiewicz Collection, CNG, Triton IV, December 2000, lot 2433,Ex "The Alicia and Sid Belzeberg Collection," Stack's, Rosemount, IL, April 24, 2008, lot 1047. During the reign of August III, Kajetan Ignacy Soltyk (1715-1788), scion of the prominent Saltykov family of Russia, became one of the most important politicians at the royal court. Initially tied to the defacto ruler of Poland Count Heinrich v. Brühl, Soltyk, in the 1760's, because of various conflicts, distanced himself from the Saxon-Polish statesman. After the death of August III, Soltyk opposed the election of Stanislaw August Poniatowski and went on to work with pro-Russian factions to dethrone him. But in the shifting landscape of political alliances, Soltyk eventually became an opponent of the Russian ambassador and provocateur Nicholas Repnin. As a result of his vocal opposition to the Repnin Sejm of 1767-1768, Solytk was imprisoned in Kaluga. He returned from imprisonment in 1781. His increasingly erratic behavior allowed his opponents to declare him insane and Soltyk was unable to reclaim his Bishopric.Under the Bishops of Kraków, the Silesian town of Siewierz had its own laws, treasury and army, but apparently never exercised any mint rights. Twelve years after Bishop Soltyk's death, his nephew Michal Soltyk had the engraver Szapacha Wappenstein strike private coins for Siewierz - a silver Grosz dated 1761 and a gold Ducat dated 1762, along with some Ducats in silver. Count Hutten-Czapski speculated that he did this in order to preserve related mint rights that were granted in 1232 but never utilized.

Los 1280

Virtuti Militari Medal, 1792. Gold. Oval, 43 x 34mm. 19th Century restrike. Collector's mark of Count Emeryk Hutten-Czapski within the oval of the "R" in the SAR monogram, and apparently struck to his order (Cf. Ordery I odznaczenia polskie, Puchalski/Wojciechowski, p.31, 27; Polskie Ordery I Odznaczenia, W.Stela, p.11-22). Exceedingly rare. Uncirculated. Ex Morton & Eden Sale, London, November 27, 2013, lot 84. Comes with tag. On May 18, 1792, a Russian army of nearly 100,000 men invaded Poland to crush the May Third 1791 Constitution. After his troops' success in the June 18 Battle of Ziele?ce, the Polish commander, the king's nephew, Józef Poniatowski, pushed for the issuance of a military award, using the Austrian "Praemio Virtuti Bellico Constituto" as a model. The Warsaw mint began producing the oval medals within a week, June 25, and ceased production on August 30. It is believed, it made 290 to 440 silver and 65 to 95 gold medals.

Los 1026

Jewish Resistance Medals, following World War II. The OJC was established to provide an organized response to the persecutions of the Jews in France. Jews were, in fact, overrepresented in the French Resistance compared to their percentage of the French population. The OJC comprised about nine autonomous Jewish groups that were formed especially to help the Jews in France. The most prominent were the Jewish Scouts (EIF), the Jewish Army (AJ), the Organization of Assistance for Children (OSE), and the Movement of the Zionist Youth (MJS). These were established at the initial stages of the occupation and operated until the liberation of France. The members of the various OJC groups cooperated in a wide range of activities. They rescued thousands of adults and children by providing them with hiding places or forged papers, and organized convoys to Switzerland and Spain. They formed guerrilla organizations in the main cities of France and in the mountains. They maintained a network of secret agents who transferred money from Switzerland to France and supplied it for the various underground activities and needs. Finally, following the Allied invasion in June 1944, they participated with the general French Resistance in fighting to liberate France. After the liberation, the French authorities acknowledged the OJC and awarded its members with Resistance medals and war decorations, such as the four examples in this lot-all with Stars of David on ribbons. The dates on one medal 18 Juin 1940/8 Septembre 1961 are significant. The "Appeal of 18 June" in 1940 was a famous speech by Charles de Gaulle, the leader of the Free French Forces, which is often considered to be the origin of the French Resistance to the German occupation during World War II. On September 8, 1961 there was an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate De Gaulle. About 34 mm each. Historic and rarely offered.

Los 139

Judaea, Bar Kokhba Revolt. Silver Sela (14.14 g), 132-135 CE. Year 1 (132/3 CE). 'Jerusalem' (Paleo-Hebrew), tetrastyle façade of the Temple of Jerusalem; show bread table or Ark of the Covenant in chest form with semicircular lid and short legs, seen from a narrow side. Rev. 'Year one of the redemption of Israel' (Paleo-Hebrew), lulav with etrog at left. Hendin 1373; Mildenberg 1 (O1/R3); TJC 218. Very rare. An absolutely incredible example! Boldly struck and well centered with nice wide margins. Virtually as struck! Traces of luster still evident. One of the finest in existence. Superb Extremely Fine. From the S. Moussaieff Collection, This lot has been officially exported from Israel through the Israel Antiquities Authority. The Bar Kokhba War (132-135 CE) broke out when Hadrian decided to refound Jerusalem - still largely ruined from the disastrous Jewish Revolt (66-73 CE) - as the pagan city of Aelia Capitolina. Although Jewish discontent had already erupted into violence in the Diaspora during the reign of Trajan, the Jews of Judaea seem not to have risen up against the Romans until this threatened abomination against the site of the Temple and the surrounding Holy City. The leader of this new rebellion, which took the form of a bloody guerilla war, was a certain Simon bar Kokhba who had messianic pretensions and gained a reputation as a great warrior. Unfortunately, although Bar Kokhba managed to make Hadrian pay dearly for Aelia Capitolina, when the emperor assembled an army of six full legions to invade Judaea in 134 CE the rebellion was soon crushed. In punishment almost the entirety of Judaea was laid waste by the victorious Romans and the Jewish population destroyed or driven out. In order to fund the rebellion, Bar Kokhba and his supporters used what circulating coins they could find or capture from the Romans and restruck them with new types more suitable for their revolutionary purposes. The most remarkable and desirable of the new types were used for the silver sela overstruck primarily on Syrian and Phoenician tetradrachms. The obverse features a depiction of the façade of the Jerusalem Temple with an uncertain object inside, which has been variously interpreted as the show bread table or the Ark of the Covenant. It has been suggested that the Bar Kokhba rebels actually intended to rebuild the Temple, but the presence of either the show bread table or the Ark - items lost at the end of the Jewish Revolt or earlier - seems to imply that the image represents the idea of the Temple to rally support rather than any real edifice planned by the Bar Kokhba rebels. The reverse type looks back to the coinage of the Jewish Revolt in its depiction of the lulav and etrog associated with the Festival of Tabernacles.

Los 3128

Award # 23802. Silver. Type 3, screwback. Comes with original temporary certificate and original receipt of temporary certificate confirming this order to be awarded to the 1170th Light Artillery “Brandenburg” “Red Banner” “Order of B.Khmelnitsky” “Order of A.Nevsky” Regiment, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR. Date of decree is February 19, 1945. Award number is specified on both documents. Not a lot is known about 1170th Regiment. According to documents and available sources, its’ last WWII commander was Colonel Malahov. During the war, it was part of 197th Artillery “Lodzinsky” “Order of Suvorov” “Order of Kutuzov” Brigade, 1st Guards Tank Army, 1st Belorussian front. However, by some accounts, the Brigade was decommissioned in November, 1946, other accounts state that the Brigade was still listed as active in mid-1950’s. No accounts have it as active beyond that. Extremely rare documented UNIT AWARD. Elusive in private hands. Condition: Superficial scratches on the enamel, perfect otherwise with most of the gold plating still visible under even gray patina.

Hungary. Order of Merit Set awarded to Soviet Marshal F.I. Tolbukhin. Gilt and enamels. Cross. 42 mm. “1949” diestruck on back. On ribbon. Star. 65.5 mm. “949” engraved on back; and Ribbon Badge. W.680-681. In original case of issue. With Award Certificate dated Budapest, May 1, 1950, to (posthumously) Fyodor Ivanovich Tolbukhin for his role in liberating Hungary from the Germans. Very rare and important. During World War II, Fyodor Ivanovich Tolbukhin (1894-1949) served as Chief of Staff for the Crimean Front, 1941-1942, Assistant Commander of the Stalingrad Military District, Commander of the 58th Army, Commander of the Southern Front and Commander of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. On September 12, 1944 he was promoted to Marshal of the Soviet Union. Widely respected by both his fellow commanders and his men, Tolbukhin is considered one the finest Soviet generals of World War II. Under his command, Bucharest, Sofia and Belgrade were liberated, while he took part in the liberation of Hungary and Austria. Decorated many times for bravery, Tolbukhin was the recipient of the Victory Order and Hero of the Soviet Union. After the war, he served as Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Group of Forces, which comprised the Balkan region. From January 1947 to his death, Tolbukhin was the commander of the Transcaucasus Military District. Condition: Choice

Los 45

Bithynian Kingdom. Nikomedes IV Philopator. Silver Tetradrachm (16.52 g), ca. 94-74 BC. BE 210 (88/7 BC). Diademed head of Nikomedes IV right. Reverse: BA?I?E?? E?I?ANOY? NIKOMH?OY, Zeus standing facing, head left, holding wreath and scepter; to left, eagle standing on thunderbolt above magistrate's monogram and date (I?). Callataÿ p. 64; DCA 445. Extremely rare date. Excellent portrait with some minor deposits in the field. Very Fine. The Bithynian Kingdom held a considerable place among the minor monarchies of Anatolia. The coins of the Bithynian kings depict their regal portraits in a highly accomplished Hellenistic style. Nicomedes IV, the last king of Bithynia, was defeated by Mithridates VI of Pontos, and, after being restored to his throne by the Roman Senate, bequeathed his kingdom by will to the Roman Republic in 74 B.C.In 88 B.C., Mithradates destroyed Nikomedes' army forcing him to flee to Italy. His throne was not restored until Rome defeated Mithradates in 84 B.C. Waddington, Recueil General, pp. 217-8, notes, "it is difficult to explain the very rare coins that bear the dates IC, AIC, BIC. These dates correspond to 89/8 to 87/6 BC; but between mid-88 and the end of 83, the whole of Bithynia was in the hands of Mithradates Eupator. We are forced to conjecture (no text says so) that during this period several fortified places in Bithynia remained faithful to the legitimate king and continued to strike coins in his name."

Judaea, Hasmonean Kingdom. Mattathias Antigonos (Mattatayah). Æ 8 Prutot (13.90 g), 40-37 BCE. Jerusalem. 'Mattatayah the High Priest and Council of the Jews' (Paleo-Hebrew), double cornucopiae. Rev. BA[CI?EOC ANTI?ONOY], ivy wreath tied with ribbons. Hendin 1162; TJC 36. Glossy dark green patina and well centered. Choice Very Fine. From the Palm Desert Collection. Purchased from Superior in the 1980s. In 40 BCE, at the head of a Parthian army, Mattathias II Antigonus drove Herod the Great and his puppet, the Hasmonaean ethnarch, John Hyrcanus II, out of Jerusalem and was proclaimed king and High Priest by the Parthians and his Jewish supporters. Unfortunately, the wily Herod was not so easily defeated and returned in 39 BCE armed with recognition as the Roman client-king of Judaea. The hapless Mattathias II was ultimately defeated and crucified for his troubles, leaving Judaea to begin a new period in its troubled history under the often hated Herodian dynasty.

Vespasian. Æ Sestertius (28.46 g), AD 69-79. Judaea Capta type. Rome, AD 71. IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M TR P P P COS III, laureate head of Vespasian right. Rev. IVDAEA CAPTA, S C in exergue, palm tree; to left, bound captive standing right before pile of arms; to right, Judaea seated right in attitude of mourning. Hendin 1500; RIC 159; BN 490; BMC 533. A lovely example with glossy chocolate-brown patina. We note some minor pitting on the reverse. Choice Very Fine. From the S. Moussaieff Collection, This lot has been officially exported from Israel through the Israel Antiquities Authority. The elements of the reverse type include a palm-tree flanked on the left by the emperor, with his foot on a helmet, and on the right, by the personified Judaea, seated to right on a cuirass. In the scene, the emperor is representative of the vast power of Rome. His foot on a helmet of the defeated enemy and his large parazonium symbolize the might of the dominant victor. The emperor is drawn on a much larger scale than is the much more diminutively wrought personified Judaea. The downcast Judaea is seated upon a cuirass, which here represents the spoils of her defeated army. Her pose connotes the humiliation of destruction, captivity and exile. This image was designed both as an exultation of the empire and as a warning to any other province that might be contemplating rebellion.
