JUNE 1815/ TO THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON AND THE BRITISH ARMY WILLIAM KERR SIXTH MARQUIS OF LOTHIAN AND HIS TENANTRY DEDICATE THIS MONUMENT 30TH JUNE 1815./ WELLINGTON/ VICTORY" 47cm high overall, the base 12cm wide Provenance: Property from Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian. This may be a model for a monument, not realised, commissioned by the 6th Marquis of Lothian in 1815 to commemorate Wellington's victory at Waterloo. Mullin and J. Price.Ernest McConnell was awarded the Daily Herald Industrial Heroism Medal for twice saving men from drowning at Liverpool Docks, in December 1957 and December 1958, and the original Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society certificates accompany this lot. Provenance: - Consigned by a direct descendant, who informs us that E. McConnell served in both Wars, but was sent back from WWI for being underage. He was a Quartermaster Sergeant in the 8th Army during WWII. Footnote: - Only 440 Daily Herald Industrial Heroism medals were awarded from 1923-1964.

Their two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Hayward (1906-1976) and Harriet Taft Hayward (1907-1968), lived at Oakwald, Franklin, Massachusetts and were both painted by the artist Sir John Lavery (1856 - 1941); see Christie's, The Scottish Sale at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, 6975, 28th October 2004, Lot 152.Mary Elizabeth married Henry Bernard Arthur de Bruyne (1898 - 1976) and eventually came to live in England at Skyring House, Worthing, from circa 1929 until 1939 when the property was commandeered by the British Army. After World War II they moved to Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.  Condition Report: Please note, this cassone should be dated as 'late 19th or early 20th century' and not as originally listed in the catalogue.The marks, knocks, scratches, and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old splits, chips, and losses. Various areas of wear and losses to the raised gesso elements and paint. The underside of the top with 'butterfly' repairs to a split across it. King, 1876, 2nd edition, 2 volumes, inscribed presentation copy from Lady Isabel Burton to Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888), British author, international traveller, diplomatist and mystic "To Laurence Oliphant from his sincere friend the author 4th Feby 1879", to half title of volume 1, and with Oliphant's pencil remarks and lines to several leaves of the text, woodbury type mounted photographic portrait frontispieces of Lady Isabel and Richard Burton + 2 chromolithograph plates (lacks folding map), contemporary rebound black cloth gilt, both volumes retaining star and crescent and cross of Lorraine symbols in the original black cloth gilt to front covers, volume 2 retaining original backstrip gilt, armorial bookplates to front pastedowns of George Fleming CB (1833-1901), Scottish veterinary surgeon, anti-vivisectionist and travellerFleming served through the Crimean War. In 1860 he volunteered for the Second Opium War, and was present at the Third Battle of Taku Forts and the surrender of Beijing, receiving for his services a medal with two clasps. In 1866 he obtained the diploma of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and in 1867 served with the army in Syria and Egypt. While Fleming was in China he made an expedition beyond the Great Wall, which he described in Travels on Horseback in Manchu Tartary (1865). Autograph note signed in initials by George Fleming affixed to front pastedown of volume 1 "These volumes were presented by the authoress, Mrs Burton, to Laurence Oliphant in 1879, and were evidently carefully read by him when he was travelling in Syria in 1880, as the bindings were very dilapidated when they came into my possession. His remarks, in pencil, and lines on the pages, leads to the inference that the book was an aid to him when writing The Land of Gilead, published in 1881. G.F." (2)

Territorial Army Nursing Service Nurse uniform, blue-grey cloth including cap with TANS badge, jacket with two TANS badges, three shoulder buttons, cape with two TANS badges, belt with silver plated buckle, apron, dress.Condition report:The outer jacket is in fair condition, there is a repaired patch above the top front button, the lining is generally ok, some snags and minor tears but not significantly ripped. Then as you go down through the layers you see an increasing amount of moth and insect activity/ holes. The cowl has some holes to the back and shoulders; the under dress with pleated front is really quite significantly punctuated with holes, mostly to the back, also to the armpits. The linen aspects are all discoloured.

George Swindin 14ct gold 1936-37 London Combination League Winners medal,  the obverse inscribed LONDON FOOTBALL COMBINATION, the reverse inscribed Winners 1936-37, in original fitted case Medal Weight 20g Arsenal won the Combination League this season with 68 points, West Ham United being runners-up on 66 points George Swindin joined Arsenal in April 1936 for £4,000 and made his debut against Brentford, playing 19 matches in his first season. The following season he played in 17 League matches helping arsenal to the League title. He continued to play through the WWII  for Arsenal, while serving as a physical training instructor in the Army, making guest appearances for clubs including Leeds United, Clapton Orient and Southampton. At the resumption of football proper after the war he became the Arsenal undisputed No.1, a commanding keeper with excellent aerial ability and assured handling. Medal Weight 21g Arsenal won the Combination League this season with 71 points, Portsmouth being runners-up on 63 points George Swindin joined Arsenal in April 1936 for £4,000 and made his debut against Brentford, playing 19 matches in his first season. The following season he played in 17 League matches helping arsenal to the League title. He continued to play through the WWII  for Arsenal, while serving as a physical training instructor in the Army, making guest appearances for clubs including Leeds United, Clapton Orient and Southampton. At the resumption of football proper after the war he became the Arsenal undisputed No.1, a commanding keeper with excellent aerial ability and assured handling. A Victorian three-piece silver-plated table garniture, mid-19th century, probably by T Wilkinson of Birmingham and London, marked K & Co., possibly for Kay & Co. of Worcester, comprising a large centre stand with moulded glass dish, flanked by two smaller stands with etched glass bowls, the centrepiece 40cm wide 30.5cm high, two stands 18cm wide 23cm high (6)T Wilkinson & Sons Ltd. was founded in Sheffield in 1832 by Thomas Wilkinson, who trained as a plater and silversmith following his service in the army during the Napoleonic Wars. In the mid-1840s, following a move to Birmingham where there appeared to be more attractive prospects, he turned to electroplating, a process that had recently been patented by Elkington’s, and was one of the first to receive a franchise from the firm.Condition ReportAll with diamond registration marks.
