NVLLI around, the reverse with motto HONOR’, PRIN’, MAG’, BRIT, FRA’, ET, HIB’, NAT, 29, MAI’, ANN’ 1630, within a decorative tablet Dimensions:30mm diameter, 4.5g Provenance:Provenance: Property of a Gentleman – Previously from the collection of Sir Colin MacRae (1869-1952) of Feorlinn and Lady Margaret Crichton Stuart (1875-1964)Lady Margaret Crichton-Stuart was the daughter of John Patrick-Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, and her daughter Gwendolin was named after her own mother. It is through Gwendolin’s daughter, Daphne Battine, that the collection descends to the current vendor. Lady Margaret Crichton-Stuart married Colin MacRae of Feoirlinn in 1909. A Colonel in the British Army, he was appointed Commander of the British Empire (C.B.E.), and held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) as well as the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.). MacRae was a member of the prestigious Royal Company of Archers. In 1935 he received his knighthood and served with distinction throughout his Army career, the National Portrait Gallery houses his portraits, NPG x152976, showcasing his rank in full dress uniform. MacRae was a huge enthusiast of pipe music and in particular Piobaireachd. As a patron of this art it encouraged his Highland heritage - both he and Lady Margaret were well-regarded supporters of the Highlands. Their links to the highland heritage seems to have driven their appetite for collecting such artefacts. An article in the Scotsman of August 20th 1945 shows that MacRae accepted the invitation to the bicentenary of the ‘Forty Five at Glenfinnan. Perhaps this allegiance to the Highland cause shaped their collecting of Jacobite works of Art, which can be seen particularly in their Jacobite quaich. This quaich is purported to be a gift to Prince Charles Edward Stuart’s servant, Ronald MacDonald, after the battle at Culloden, and a pocketbook relating to the executed Lord Lovat perhaps shows sympathies to well-known Jacobite supporters. The collection also includes a group of commemorative medallions, including two rare pendants showing support for the Stuart King Charles. Keen to collect items of Scottish importance after the death of Sir Colin, in 1955 parts of the collection would ultimately be on long-term loan to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, continuing some time into the 1980s. Note: References:Eimer, C., 'British Commemorative Medals, and their values', item 115Note:Struck in both gold and silver there are various die pairings recorded for its production. Indeed two distinct versions of the obverse are recorded, this being the slightly simpler version. This number of variations suggests that the medallion would have been widely distributed at the birth of Prince Charles (later King Charles II) throughout the kingdoms.

* Houedard (Dom Sylvester, 1924-1992). Splendid Weeping, circa 1960, colour screenprint printed in red and blue, published in an edition of 75, signed with initials and numbered '7.75' in pencil lower right, sheet size 57 x 78 cm (22 1/2 x 30 3/4 ins), framed and glazed (60 x 81 cm)QTY: (1)NOTE:Born on Guernsey, as Pierre (Peter) Thomas Paul Jean Houédard, he studied at Jesus College, Oxford. He served in British Army Intelligence from 1944 to 1947, and in 1949 joined the Benedictine Prinknash Abbey in Gloucestershire, being ordained as a priest in 1959 and taking the religious name Sylvester. Houédard was a leading exponent of concrete poetry, with regular contributions to magazines and exhibitions from the early 1960s onward. His elaborate, typewriter-composed visual poems ("typestracts") were scattered across many chapbooks.

Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver, serial number 100964, .44 calibre, 20cm barrel, the cylinder with very faded engraving, possibly of a naval scene, two part wooden grip.Condition report:The firing mechanism doesn't function, although the cylinder rotates and the loading lever mechanism are fine. The barrel wedge assembly is heavily scratched and worn, and there is a 2.5cm scratch to the barrel itself just above the wedge. Various historic slight indentations along the length of the barrel. Some of the screws are a little loose. Two small screw holes to the top of the grip on the left hand side. The faintly engraved scene on the cylinder is so faint it is not proving possible to capture on an image.

[Chhattisgarh Province], dated from April 1897 to July 24th 1951, [54]ff, of which one leaf is signed George P. and Victoria Mary, the future King George V (1865-1936) and Queen Mary of Teck (1867-1953), as Prince and Princess of Wales during their 1905-06 tour of British India, the leaf, dated 16th March 1906, with the further autograph signatures of their courtiers, Anthony and Constance Ashley-Cooper, the Earl and Countess of Shaftesbury (1869-1961) and (née Grosvenor; 1875-1957), Col. the Hon. Sir George (1874-1952) and Lady Mary Crichton (née Dawson; 1887-1961), Lt.-Col. the Hon. Sir Derek (1863-1944) and Lady Bridget Keppel (née Harbord; d. 1951), Captain Sir Bryan Godfrey-Faussett (1863-1945), an indistinct Singh, and others, loosely-inserted lithographed menu from Government House, Karachi, dated 17th March 1906 and inscribed: Royal Visit/State Banquet/A.D. Younghusband/Commissioner in Sind- (?the owner of this volume), further inscribed leaves throughout, including the autograph of Field Marshal Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916), while Viscount Kitchener of Khartoum and Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in India, dated 18th Nov. 1908, Khengarji III, Maharajah of Kutch (1866-1942), George Curzon, 1st Marquess of Curzon (1859-1925), signed Curzon of Kedleston and dated November 20 1899 while Viceroy and as Baron Curzon of Kedleston, and his aide-de-camp Clive Wigram (1873-1960), later Baron Wigram, a later viceroy, Charles Hardinge, Baron Hardinge of Penshurt (1858-1944), other signatures in places, include Lt.-Col. Lord Charles (1868-1956) and Lady Cicely Cavendish-Bentinck (née Grenfell; 1872-1936), the explorer Lt.-Col. Sir Francis Edward Younghusband (1863-1942) and various members of his family, the geologist George Hyde Wollaston (1844-1926) and his wife, Brig.-Gen. William (1860-1923) and Constance Sitwell (d. 1908), frequent officers of the India Army, various regiments, including Lt.-Col. Stair F. B. Dalrymple Hay, further dignitaries and colonial officials, family friends, some of whom left informal/humorous comments, including a Boxing Day guest of 1902 who refers to the upcoming durbar, two guests from October 28th 1904 conclude that they 'Have habitually eaten too much!' and 'Plenty drink', a few weeks later - November 1st - another 'Had to leave the breakfast table rather hurriedly', further comments and an occasional complaint (i.e. 'Too much brandy with the pudding' and 'Too many boots in the tent') lead one to conclude that the 'Complaint Book', as lettered on the binding, is more of a joke rather than a hotel's repurposed volume, the owners of the volume took it visiting as some leaves are addressed from Calcutta, Government House, Karachi, one or two leaves repaired at the inner-gutter, contemporary brown morocco gilt, perished spine, rubbed and bumped with some losses, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, 4to
