§ Frank Watson Wood (British, 1862-1953) The Battle of Bannockburn signed lower left "F Watson Wood" oil on canvas, unframed 61 x 92cm (24 x 36in) The Battle of Bannockburn on 24 June, 1314 was a significant Scottish victory in the First War of Scottish Independence and a landmark in Scottish history. Stirling Castle, a Scots royal fortress occupied by the English, was under siege by the Scottish army. The English king, Edward II, assembled a formidable force to relieve it. This attempt failed, and his army was defeated in a pitched battle by a smaller army commanded by the King of Scots, Robert the Bruce. Unframed, dirty and with the blacks coalescing. Scattered scuff marks, particularly along the bottom edge.
English School (19th Century) Mrs Mary Anne Clarke's Examination before the Committee of the House of Commons print on glass, published March 21 1809 by J Hinton, 44 Wall Street, London 25 x 35cm (10 x 14in) Frederick, Duke of York (1766 - 1827) was King George III's second and purportedly favourite son, as well as commander in chief of the army in 1798. The Duke, a known adulterer, became involved with the socialite and adventuress Mrs Clarke in 1803. The Duke used his civil list income to subsidise her lavish lifestyle as his mistress. As his mistress Mrs Clarke exploited her relationship with the Duke to extract venal payments from those in the military, civil and clerical service seeking promotions and preferential treatment by the Duke. Their affair ended in 1805, the Duke sought discretion and bought her silence by committing to an annual pension which he paid to her until 1808. When the Duke stopped his payments to Mrs Clarke, she broke her silence and scandalous rumours about the Duke emerged in the public press. The scandal sparked demands for reforms, and rumours of corruption in the army attracted the attention of radicals seeking to campaign for parliamentary reform - such radicals as Whig MP Gwyllym Wardle whose revisionary interest led him to instigate an open commons inquiry. Mrs Clarke embraced the scandal - contemporary sources suggest she delighted in exposing and exacerbating the accusations brought against her and the Duke. The scandal led the Duke to resign from his position as Commander in Chief. It later emerged that Wardle had allegedly bought the testimony of Mrs Clarke against the Duke having promised to buy the furnishing for her house, this discredited Wardle who ended up fleeing the country from his debtors. With the disgrace of Wardle the Duke was reinstated as Commander in Chief of the army in 1811. In 1810 Mrs Clarke continued to profit from the scandal by publishing a mendacious account called 'The Rival Princes'. Mrs Anne Clarke died in 1852. There is a tear to the bottom left-hand corner and some browning and discolouration. A few scattered areas of damage.

A First World War group of medals, awarded to 16 Lieutenant Thomas Christopher Maynard, Royal Garrison Artillery, to include: Military Cross inscribed 'Bray 22nd Aug 1918, 2nd Lieut T.C. Maynard D.C.M. 120 H.B. R.G.A.' , Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1914-15 Star, War Medal, Victory Medal and Territorial Efficiency Medal, all mounted to a board, with ribbons and miniatures. Not a lot is known of Maynard's military history, after which he became a Colliery Agent in the North East. He is noted to have joined the RGA in 1914 at the start of the war and was awarded the DCM "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has done excellent work as No. 1 throughout and has at all times set a splendid example to the men" (London Gazette 13th Feb 1917), with it being awarded (London Gazette 1st January 1917). His Military Cross was awarded for his part in the action on Bray-sur-Somme, 22nd August 1918. Bray was of strategic importance for both sides as it was a crossing point of the Somme river. It changed hands four times during the war, firstly occupied by the Germans when setting up the Western Front, but it soon came under heavy attack from French bombing and was re-taken 4th October 1914. It was used as an important fuel and munitions point throughout the Battle of the Somme. On 21st March 1918 the Germans held a major offensive against the town, Operation Michael, and despite initial success to keep the German Army at bay, the town was then relinquished to German rule again, but not for long. In June/August 1918 it took cooperation between allied forces to retake the town for the last time, British and French artillery and aerial bombing, American and Australian forces and British Mk. V tanks to take the town under command once again. Maynard was promoted to Lieutenant 22nd January 1919 (London Gazette 10th Feb 1920) and resigned his commission 21st February 1920 (London Gazette 20th February 1920).
